MANILA, Philippines — Three children died after a fire struck their house in Mandaluyong on Thursday night, the Bureau of Fire Protection said.

The victims – two siblings, aged two and four, and their relative, a seven-year-old girl – were on the fourth floor of a four-story house in an informal community in Barangay Addition Hills when the fire broke out at around 7:34 p.m.

Residents helped put out the blaze using fire extinguishers and pails of water.

S/Insp. Bryan Pillula, city fire station operations chief, said firemen recovered the siblings inside their bedroom while the older girl was found lying on the floor outside the room.

The parents of the children were at work when the fire occurred.

Pillula said they are investigating what caused the fire, which originated in the victims’ room.

The fire destroyed P200,000 worth of property.
