86,113 influenza-like cases recorded this year
MANILA, Philippines — Up to 86,113 cases of influenza-like illnesses have been recorded this year, according to the Department of Health.
DOH data showed the figure, which was recorded from January to August, is 22 percent lower than the 102,439 cases recorded during the same period last year.
Authorities, however, noted that the case trend is increasing, with 5,847 infections reported from Aug. 2 to 15, which is seven percent higher than the 5,450 cases reported two weeks before, or from July 19 to Aug. 1.
The DOH said close monitoring is being conducted in Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao, which showed an increase in the cases.
Children aged five to 14 years are among the most affected groups, accounting for 24 percent or 19,091 cases.
Influenza-like illnesses manifest common symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, colds, body aches and headaches, especially following exposure to rain and cold weather.
The DOH reminded the public to get flu vaccine regularly to protect themselves from influenza-like illnesses.
The World Health Organization said vaccines can protect people against certain illnesses and prevent hospitalization.
