5 sailors back in Manila after Oman attack

MANILA, Philippines — Five Filipino seafarers who survived an attack on the bulk carrier Cape Dao off the coast of Oman returned to Manila on Sunday, according to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

The OWWA said the sailors arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on a Qatar Airways flight.

Together with representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers and OWWA, the overseas Filipino workers were given airport, medical, welfare and financial assistance.

The seafarers, who are crewmembers of the Indian-flagged cargo vessel, were sailing from Mina Saqr to India when the vessel was hit by two projectiles on Sept. 23.

The incident caused a fire, which damaged the ship’s engine room.
