Netflix tosses American 'Squid Game' spin-off — reports
MANILA, Philippines — Streaming platform Netflix has reportedly shelved development of a US spin-off show of its popular Korean survival series "Squid Game."
Talks of an American spin-off emerged a couple of years ago before the second season of "Squid Game" even premiered.
David Fincher, best known for movies likes "The Social Network" and "Fight Club," was being eyed to direct the project while "Utopia" creator Denis Kelly would pen the screenplay.
Rumors grew after award-winning actress Cate Blanchett made a surprise cameo in the "Squid Game" series finale last year despite showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk dismissing any connections.
Last week, however, a sources close to Fincher told The Playlist that his take on the groundbreaking show with the working title "Heckler" is no longer happening.

Netflix was due to begin shooting the project in the United Kingdom earlier this year, but no progress was observed and interest slowly dwindled.
Fincher — whose Netflix collaborations include "House of Cards," "Mindhunter," "Love, Death & Robots," "Mank," and "The Killer" — instead devoted focus to "The Adventures of Cliff Booth," a standalone sequel to "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," for the streamer.
The platform additionally appears to be more interested now in developing versions of "Squid Game" that cater to international markets instead of a singular English-language project.
Apart from the three seasons of the main show, the only released spin-off projects by Netflix were reality competition series "Squid Game: The Challenge" and video game "Squid Game: Unleashed."
