Come, join us celebrate 2026 June 5 World Environment Day!

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

Climate action is June 15, 2026’s World Environment Day (WED) theme.

“The planet doesn’t argue. It doesn’t negotiate. It sends signals—rising seas, raging wildfires, heatwaves, melting glaciers.

We said 1.5°C was the limit. We are crossing it.

For decades, the world has heard the climate story—warnings, targets, distant deadlines. Too often, the response has been clouded by noise: delay, distraction, denial.

But listen closer now.

Beneath the noise, another signal is rising. Solar panels stretch across rooftops. Wind turbines line the horizon. Cities are being redesigned for people. Forests are being replanted. Positive tipping points are taking root in every corner of the planet.

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change—on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back.

UNEP’s (United Nations Environment Programme) global campaign calls on all of us to step in, to move further, to steer a world already in motion.

The question is no longer if change comes, but how we guide it and how fast it happens.”

Cebu Province, CACEC (Cebu Archdiocesan Commission on Environmental Concern), RCE-Cebu (Regional Center of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development), Kaabag sa Sugbu Foundation Inc., with more than 30 Cebu CSOs (civil society organizations) and partners have all united together to join the rest of the global community in remembering/celebrating World Environment Day tomorrow, June 5!

With the theme - #NowforClimate (Panaghiusa alang sa Katawhan ug Kinaiyahan, Lihok Na, Karon Na!), everyone is warmly invited to join tomorrow’s 2026 June 5 Cebu celebration of World Environment Day at Capitol’s beautiful Heritage Park from 8 a.m to 5 p.m!

This is the 2nd year that the Cebu CSOs and partners are celebrating this urgent event. 2030, our deadline for managing global warming, is less than 4 years from now!

All of us are asked to do our share, together, as a whole world!

Otherwise, expect worse consequences for our people, for our earth.

Polycrisis is now globally experienced. Everyone is witness to widening/deepening poverty/hunger, stronger/deadlier typhoons/extreme heat waves, among other challenges seriously affecting people, communities, our environment, our planet, and us all!

We all must act now, for climate! Lihok na, karon na!!!

How?

Come and join tomorrow’s WED celebration and learn various eco-initiatives of eco-advocates that have sustainably protected Cebu’s ecosystems, from reef to ridge!

Walk through the various displays these eco-protectors have prepared for you all – how they have protected our seas/marine resources, our farms and agriculture, our urban systems, our mountains and forests.

Enjoy as well the varied products from the diverse ecosystems that they have continued to regenerate and sustain through the years!

Engage with these eco-protectors as they share demos and presentations about their eco-initiatives!

And please don’t forget to thank and honor these eco-protectors for caring for our people, our communities, our common home, our earth!

Unite with us for the 8 a.m. Laudato Si Mass to be celebrated by CACEC head, Fr. Jonas Yap.

This will be followed by the 9-11 a.m. Welcome Ceremony with the important presence and message of the event’s special guest Governor Pam Baricuatro, Cebu’s genuine leader and partner for protecting this province’s ecosystems. She will be guided through the eco-displays of Cebu’s eco-protectors and their eco-initiatives and a dialogue about eco-concerns from the CSOs and partners.

An important highlight of this 2026 WED celebration is the Youth Hour from 11-12 and from 2-4 with enthusiastic participants from USJ-R, UP Cebu CCAD, Zero Hour, San Francisco, Camotes.

Come and enjoy the food, drinks, other items plus an ecumenical/cultural segment prepared for you all!

Finally, gather and unite with all the participants/guests to greet and join the rest of the global community for this historic 2026 June 5 World Environment Day celebration!!!
