PNP to secure VP impeachment trial

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police yesterday said PNP personnel are ready to secure the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, which begins today.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said all police units have been ordered to implement a comprehensive security plan and remain on heightened alert throughout the impeachment trial.
The security preparations aim to ensure that the trial of the Senate impeachment court will not be disrupted, according to the PNP.
Nartatez said the police deployment is backed by intelligence monitoring, regular threat assessments and close coordination with the Senate and other government agencies.
Despite heightened security, Nartatez said authorities have not monitored any threat that could disrupt the impeachment trial of Duterte.
Nartatez directed police officers to exercise maximum tolerance and professionalism while respecting the constitutional rights of protesters expected to gather near the Senate.
National Capital Region Police Office spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said 6,316 NCRPO personnel have been deployed to secure the Senate complex.
