Chris Evans open to reprising Human Torch over Captain America

MANILA, Philippines — Actor Chris Evans has been the face of numerous comic book characters, most famously Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but the superhero Evans would to like do again isn't Steve Rogers but an earlier and as popular Marvel character — the Human Torch.

Evans portrayed Johnny Storm in two "Fantastic Four" movies, the second of which appeared a year before the birth of the MCU with 2008's "Iron Man."

In a recent interview with MTV while promoting his newest film "Lightyear," Evans expressed his openness to playing the Human Torch again should Marvel come knocking.

"Wouldn't that be great?" Evans pondered, admitting that no one has ever asked him to reprise Johnny Storm the same way Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield played their versions of Spider-Man in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" alongside the MCU Peter Parker played by Tom Holland.

Evans joked how the "Fantastic Four" films being released nearly two decades ago indicated how old he was, but reiterated his love for the character of Johnny Storm.

"That would actually be an easier sell to me than coming back as Cap," Evans said, admitting he did not want to disrupt the grand exit he gave the character in "Avengers: Endgame" and has since passed the mantle to Anthony Mackie's character.

For Evans, the Human Torch did not get the final bow he deserves. "I loved that role, and you know, who knows."

In 2015, Fox attempted to reboot the "Fantastic Four" with Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm. The film was a critical and box office failure, and all sequel plans were canceled; Jordan would go on to play Killmonger in the MCU's "Black Panther."

Disney acquired Fox in 2019 thus having the Fantastic Four and the X-Men on their catalog, and Marvel Studios is currently developing a new "Fantastic Four" movie currently set for a 2023 or 2024 release.

"Spider-Man" director Jon Watts was initially attached to the film but departed to pursue other projects. John Krasinski played Reed Richard/Mr. Fantastic in a cameo role in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," but so far that is the official extent of his involvement.
