REVIEW: 'Tumbang Preso': A call to fight human trafficking

Joyce Jimenez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines- Human trafficking is a reality happening everywhere in the world, even here in the Philippines.

This is the message that Director Kip Oebanda wanted to raise in his film “Tumbang Preso.”

The film tackles how a 15-year-old boy struggled and fought for his freedom after he and his cousin were trafficked by people whom they trust.

Newbie actor Kokoy de Santos played the lead role of the film. Unlike other human-trafficking related films, Kokoy's character, Carlo, portrayed a victim who fights back against his oppressor. He used his wits to save not only himself but everyone in the sardines factory.

Meanwhile, Teresa Melvar's character, Jea, portrayed a hopeless trafficking victim who is scared to stand up against her oppressor, condemning herself to her unfavorable fate.

Aside from highlighting the different side of the victims, Tumbang Preso also showed how those engaged in human trafficking are motivated by their own issues. Ronnie Lazaro's character, Jose, was forced to work as the “manager” of the factory since he is indebted to the owner Liz (Star Orjaliza).

It's the same scenario with Kean Cipriano's character, Vito, who turned a blind eye to the abuse being done to the factory workers, especially the kids. The film explored his journey to redemption.

The film also proves that a person's status in life is not a hindrance to help fight human trafficking, such as the case of Tiffy (Shamaine Buencamino) and Dra. Mila (Jaclyn Jose), who, after a brief encounter with Carlo and Jea, committed themselves to the cause of helping others.

Although based on real-life events, the film makes dramatic certain scenes to emphasize the gravity of human trafficking in the Philippines.

Catch Tumbang Preso starting October 8, at SM cinemas nationwide.
