Sen. Robin Padilla dismisses ‘bad boy,’ ‘playboy’ image

MANILA, Philippines — It was during his time in jail that Sen. Robin Padilla realized he needed to change and turn his life around.
The actor-politician was convicted of illegal possession of firearms in 1994, was released after four years in prison following a conditional pardon granted by former President Fidel V. Ramos, and received an absolute pardon from former President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016.
The turning point for Robin came during his time in jail, where he decided to straighten out his life. “When you’re inside jail and you’re alone, you would realize, ‘Oops, di pwedeng panindigan ko to. Kundi di ako lalaya. So, I started to be good. I’m not saying I’m good but nagpapakabait ako until now because it’s a struggle,” he reflected during the contract signing and mediacon of Robin’s RCP International Productions and Viva Communications, Inc. He also talked about his upcoming showbiz projects and shared his thoughts on his “bad boy” and “playboy” image.
Dubbed the “Bad Boy of Philippine cinema,” he reinforced his onscreen image with the signing of “Bad Boy 3,” set to be released soon by Viva Films. Robin’s movies will also be available on all Viva platforms as part of the partnership deal, including “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo,” “Sa Ngalan ng Ama,” “Ina at Anak,” “10,000 Hours,” “Turn: My Pledge of Love” and “Alab ng Lahi.”
He expressed his gratitude to his “father in showbiz,” Boss Vic del Rosario, for molding him into the person that he is now.
“He was the first person to see my potential in showbiz. I would not be Robin Padilla if not for him. I treat him like a father,” he remarked.
“Si Robin is almost like a son to me, parang anak ko na yan. I was the first who saw his potential as a new kind of action star,” Vic reacted. “When we did ‘Bad Boy,’ it was an action star that the Pinoy moviegoer had never seen before and it remains as one of our most successful box-office hits. I am proud of what Robin has become and I fully support his decision to be a public servant. Pang-masa talaga si Robin.”
If there’s one actor from the younger generation that Robin would like to pass the “Bad Boy of Philippine cinema” title to, it would be his nephew, Daniel Padilla.
On his “playboy” image, Robin told The STAR that he was merely accused of it.
“Napagbintangan lang ako diyan,” he said which drew a strong reaction from everyone in the room. “There’s no truth to that. Haha! Kasama lang sa packaging yan nung araw. Sa totoo lang, mabait ako. Haha!”
“Siyempre, pag pelikula, especially when it’s an action genre, hindi mawawala yung rekado na may leading lady. Kasalanan lahat ni Boss Vic yan, eh,” he quipped.
When asked about courting his leading ladies, he denied it. “It’s not true, that’s just publicity,” he answered and then explained, “Back in the day, making a film usually took one, two or three months. The longest I did was ‘Mistah,’ which took two years. Kaya na-i-in love ka talaga. But now, films are made faster because of technology.”
The leading ladies he would like to collaborate with again include Sharon Cuneta for “Maging Sino Ka Man Part 2,” Vina Morales for “Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum Part 3” and many others.
Robin has two daughters with wife Mariel Rodriguez. He has four children, including actress Kylie, with ex-wife Liezl Sicangco.
“My wife (Mariel) trusts me,” Robin answered when queried if Mariel had warned her about “new leading ladies.” “I’m a teenager now, dati kasi puberty pa yun. If you’re a teenager, napipigil mo na sarili mo.”
Meanwhile, Robin wished his estranged son-in-law Aljur Abrenica “good luck” after it was recently revealed that Aljur shares three children with his current girlfriend, AJ Raval.
Aljur and former partner Kylie have two sons, Alas and Axl.
“I have nothing to say but good luck in everything,” he commented on Aljur. “Maganda, maayos sila. Hindi sila nagaaway. Alam ko lumalabas silang pamilya (Kylie, Aljur and their kids).
“Good luck. Magsipag ka lalo kasi madami kang anak,” he told Aljur.
Robin was also asked if he had prior knowledge of Aljur having kids with AJ, he said, “I didn’t know but I’m not surprised sa mga ganyan. Hindi na kabigla-bigla yan sa panahon ngayon.”
