Claudine Barretto returns to primetime television for ‘Totoy Bato’

I had my Saturday day off all planned which, as we all know, is a rare luxury in this whirlwind life of being a journalist with anchoring, hosting and mom duties. But when I got the call that Claudine Barretto, the Optimum Star herself, was going to be at Studio 6 of the TV5 Media Center for her big primetime comeback pictorial, I did what any entertainment journo worth her salt would do. I cancelled that day-off real quick because we knew we had to be there.
So, ladies and gentlemen, Claudine is back. And not just in any role, but as Diamond in the high-octane, heart-thumping TV5 primetime series “Totoy Bato,” which is part of the Primetime Panalo lineup.
If Hollywood had Lindsay Lohan with the full-circle glow-up from tabloid chaos to red-carpet redemption, then the Philippines, we can say, has Claudine. She’s our own version of that iconic reinvention story: a woman once defined by headlines, now reclaiming her narrative with power, grace and star quality that never really left.
She’s fierce, focused and glowing. She reminds me of her Folded & Hung days with the aura that she is exuding now. That unmistakable Claudine that once ruled the 2000s primetime scene. And now, she’s stepping back into it like she never missed a beat as a Diamond.

“Talagang nagustuhan ko ‘yung kwento ni ‘Totoy Bato’ at yung role ko as Diamond,” she told me during a quick chat after the shoot. “At kung alam mo na makakatrabaho mo sila Miss Eula Valdez at Janno Gibbs, ‘di mo sasayangin ang opportunity na ‘yon.” And she meant it.
Diamond, Claudine explains, is the sister of Gemma, Totoy’s mother, who dies early in the story. “Matagal siyang nawala, pero nangako siya na babalik para protektahan si Totoy at isa-isang patumbahin lahat ng kalaban,” Claudine adds, her voice steady, her eyes gleaming with that familiar Barretto fire.
Standing there at the pictorial, watching her pose in full character — all strength and steel with just a hint of vulnerability, even the production team couldn’t help but feel the nostalgia.
I first covered Claudine during some of her most challenging years, a.k.a. her separation, the headlines, the whispers. And yet here she was now: stronger, softer and still as honest as ever.
“The annulment is ongoing,” she shared candidly.
You can tell she’s been through the storm and come out of it shining, like her character’s name. Besides her badass role in “Totoy Bato,” the Optimum star’s comeback is coming in hot with a little throwback kilig!
Yes, you read that right: Mark Anthony Fernandez and Claudine, one of the biggest love teams of the ‘90s, are reuniting on screen. When they came face-to-face again during the pictorial, you could feel the energy shift in the room. The spark was still there.
“Working with Mark… kahit alam mo na nag-break kami noon, pag nagkita kami, parang wala na lahat,” Claudine laughed. “Nasaktan kami pareho, pero wala nang bitterness.”
Mark also had great things to say about Claudine.
But beyond the comeback glitz, there’s a depth to Claudine now that wasn’t there before. She recently lost her brother Mito, and her voice softened when she talked about him, especially that they had a rift prior to his that thankfully was resolved before his final days, “More than losing her dad, ito yung biglaan. He was 66 years old.”
Claudine became emotional as she added, “It really is a big test.”
His passing, Claudine said, opened channels for communication between on-and-off estranged sister Marjorie. “It’s nice to share some good parts. Iyong nangyari sa kuya ko softened our hearts. We’re not okay but iyong pagiging civil at iyong respeto andoon. I realize that life is really short.”
Claudine also clarified the issue about her changing her last name to her then boyfriend Rico Yan’s last name. It started recently when a photo circulated of Claudine with her Tita Sita Yan, the mother of the late actor Rico, sparking rumors that she had changed her name from Barretto to Yan. So, we asked her directly.
“Gusto ko lang i-clear,” she said firmly. “Hindi ko sinabi na ako si Claudine Barretto-Yan na tinatapon ko na ang Barretto. Of course not! It’s not like that.” Her tone softened as she explained: “It’s not about Rico anymore. It’s about Tita Sita and I, our relationship, our bond as family. Now, I can say I am Sita Yan’s daughter.”
For now, Claudine is focused on her primetime comeback with issues in the backseat.
Now, as Diamond in Totoy Bato, she’s showing a new layer of that same womanhood that’s been weathered by life yet is unbreakable.
So, mark your calendars. The Optimum Star is back where she belongs on primetime starting next week, premiering on TV5’s Primetime Panalo.
