Classic 'Sesame Street' episodes heading to YouTube
KELOWNA, Canada — If anyone asks how to get to Sesame Street, just point at the red-and-white play button.
Video platform YouTube recently inked a new partnership with "Sesame Street" producers Sesame Workshop for the former to host the largest digital library of content from the beloved children's television series.
This will include hundreds of classic episodes from the show's 55-year run as well as new content created specifically for YouTube.
The social media platforms of "Sesame Street" later confirmed that episodes would be available on YouTube beginning January next year.
"Join us as we help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder, one episode at a time," the series said in its captions.
Also part of the new partnership is Sesame Workshop helming seminars for YouTube creators "to share best practices on how to create content that is entertaining while also promoting learning."
"Sesame Street" debuted on NET then later PBS (where it still runs) in the United States before being picked up by HBO in 2016.
HBO continues airing the series on its streaming platform HBO Max, and beginning November this year "Sesame Street" will also stream on Netflix, coinciding with premiere of its 56th season.
According to YouTube, "Sesame Street" content viewership on the platform has gone up by over 130% in the past year, surpassing five billion views.
Muppet characters on the educational show include Elmo, Big Bird, Grover, Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch.
