Fyang Smith makes music debut with JM Ibarra by her side

One of the highlights at the recent “Forever Fyang” album launch held at the New Frontier Theater was when Fyang Smith and onscreen partner JM Ibarra rendered a heart-fluttering act of Tayo Hanggang Dulo.
Holding hands and with the sweetest smiles on their faces, the love team evoked a warm-hearted feeling among the fans while performing their collaboration single.
“Kilig” was the term Fyang used to describe that moment with JM. “Kilig! Hindi, maybe nature na namin ni JM na ganun, eh,” the “Pinoy Big Brother: Gen 11” Big Winner told The STAR in a media huddle after her show. “We’re very comfortable and maybe we got used to performing in front of people because we did local and international shows already. Ang lapit nga nung kanina no, face-to-face with JM.”
She admitted feeling nervous before her gig but JM was there to cheer her on. As she recalled, “He went into my dressing room. I approached him and told him that I’m nervous. He said, ‘Why are you nervous? You can do it. Andito na nga yung mga tao tapos ngayon ka pa kakabahan.’ He really offered his support.”
Asked about the real score between them, Fyang evaded the question and said, “This is the last question, right? Next question, please.”
Moreover, Fyang was still in disbelief that she was able to hold her first album launch. “It feels surreal, like I couldn’t believe na naitawid ko ng maayos ang aking first-ever album launch. I’m very grateful to all those who watched and very thankful to all those who supported me.”
Her fans are the reason she started her foray into music in the first place. She told this paper, “(My passion for singing) started when people believed na kaya kong kumanta. After that, I started recording my album.”
Fyang’s five-track debut EP called “Forever Fyang” is made up of Tayo Hanggang Dulo, Mishu (Nasaan Si Fyang?), Clingy AF, Kaya Mo Ba and Para Shoot. The feel-good record was produced by StarPop label head Roque “Rox” Santos.
For Fyang, her most memorable moments at her latest event were when she did a cover of Sarah Geronimo’s Kilometro as her finale act, a duet with JM, and a sizzling dance number of Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love.
“Why Kilometro? Because when I performed it, I felt like I owned the stage and I just enjoyed the dance. I didn’t care about what people thought,” she explained. “For Tayo Hanggang Dulo, I realized now na grabe pala. I watched it and said to myself, ‘Hala, grabe siya.’ Like what I said earlier, nature na rin namin (ni JM) because we got used to it (duet performance). For Crazy in Love, it was my first time to dance like that and it was the first time that people saw me do that.”
Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid was among Fyang’s guests aside from her “PBB Gen 11” housemates Kai Montinola, Kolette Madelo and Rain Celmar.
After Regine’s staging of Wherever You Are, she and Fyang shared a brief chat on stage. The former congratulated Fyang and offered her an insightful message about having a music career. Regine told Fyang, “I know singing is a new thing for you and sometimes it’s overwhelming. Sometimes medyo natatakot ka because it’s a new thing. But what I wanted to say is that singing is a skill like dancing and writing. Even in sports, it’s a skill which means that it can be learned. At kung isasa-puso mo at isasa-isip mo ang pagpapa-practice, you could be a great singer.”
“And since you were given the opportunity to do this, not all were given the opportunity to record an album and to do a show, so kailangan lang nating kagaya ng sinabi ko isa-isip at isa-puso. All that we’re doing is for them (fans) to be happy,” continued she.
Fyang, for her part, felt honored that Regine had accepted their invitation to be among the guests. “When they asked me earlier kung saan ako mas kinakabahan, mag-perform or to interview Ms. Reg, I answered the latter. Because she’s the idol of everybody. It’s Regine Velasquez-Alcasid. It was nerve-wracking but at the same time, an honor to join her on stage.”
She expressed her appreciation for what Regine had said during their brief encounter. “Kasi binasbasan niya ako. Grabe ang trust sa akin ni Ms. Reg. Pinu-push niya ako, ‘Kaya mo yan. You will become a great singer soon.’”
Fyang’s parents also showed up at their daughter’s big event. They flew to the Philippines to witness one of Fyang’s career milestones.
