MANILA, Philippines — Filipina actress Dolly de Leon was among the most notable snubs from the announcements of the 2023 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award nominations.

Despite being well-received by critics and audiences for her portrayal in the 2022 Palme d'Or winner "Triangle of Sadness," De Leon was not among the nominees in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category.

Nominated instead were Angela Bassett for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," "Everything Everywhere All At Once" co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu, Kerry Condon for "The Banshees of Inisherin," and Hong Chau for "The Whale."

Bassett, Curtis and Condon were nominated at the Golden Globes alongside De Leon and "She Said" star Carey Mulligan, with Bassett coming out victorious for her second Golden Globe.

"Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "The Banshees of Inisherin" led all film nominees with five SAG nods including for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, equalling the records set by "Chicago," "Doubt," and "Shakespeare in Love."

This year's SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix and the streaming platform's YouTube channel on February 26, a first for the ceremony which is often aired on cable.

Asian representation at the SAG Awards

Last year Lee Jung-jae and Ho-Yeon Jung from "Squid Game" became the first Asians to win in the SAG Awards in the Television - Drama categories, while the year before saw Youn Yuh-jung from "Minari" win in the same category as De Leon to be the first-ever Asian SAG winner.

The only other actors of Asian descent to have won SAG awards prior to Youn Yuh-jung were Sandra Oh, Ben Kingsley, Tony Shalhoub, and Filipino-American Darren Criss, all in the television categories.

Other notable previous SAG nominees of Asian descent include Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe, and Dev Patel who all received nods in the film categories.

This year, Asians receiving nominations include the aforementioned Hsu and Chau, and Hsu's "Everything Everywhere All At Once" co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan.

The SAG Awards are voted by members of the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists which comprises mostly of actors, most of them also voters in the Academy Awards.

As such, the SAG Awards are seen as a major precursor to the Oscars, with the Outstanding Cast winner often winning Best Picture as seen in last year's deaf-led cast of "CODA" and 2019's Korean smash hit "Parasite."

Other previous Outstanding Cast winners have also been nominated for Best Picture such as "The Trial of the Chicago 7," "Black Panther," and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."
