Call it a case of schadenfreude, but we can’t deny that, as viewers, we find a bit of thrill in watching a fiasco unfold right in front of our eyes via television. And because of the Filipino’s penchant for pageantry and live events, there are a plenty of awkward moments in local pop culture caught on tape.
Here are five of the most cringeworthy live television moments in recent pop culture history before Alma Moreno’s “awkward” interview:
‘I don’t feel any pressure right now’
Janina San Miguel cracked under pressured during the Q&A portion of the 2008 Binibining Pilipinas pageant. San Miguel failed to answer coherently when she was asked by entrepreneur Vivienne Tan about the role her family played to her as an candidate of the beauty pageant.
"Oh my God. Okay, I'm sorry. I told you I'm so confident," she said while struggling to give out an answer. "Sorry guys because this was really my first pageant ever because I'm onl 17 years old. I did not expect that I came from one of the top 10."
Surprisingly, San Miguel still won the Bb. Pilipinas-World title that year, although she later gave up her crown.
'Wowowee' contestant mentions 'Eat Bulaga'
A contestant on ABS-CBN's "Wowowee" thanks rival show "Eat Bulaga" of GMA-7 instead. Mentioning the competitor on a rival network is taboo on local television, but it happens quite often. In this case, see how Willie Revillame saved the segment from becoming even more awkward.
Ara Mina faces Mo Twister
In 2010, Mo Twister interviewed Ara Mina, who was running for Quezon City councilor at the time, for an ANC news program. The actress was later on criticized for the political interview, with netizens calling her "clueless."
Why was she criticized? For one, Ara said she's pro-private armies and admits she did not follow the news about the Maguindanao massacre, which happened just months prior the interview. Ara also said she's against gay marriage.
"Parang gini-grill mo ako dito ha," Ara told Mo regarding his questions. "Of course," the TV host answered.
Beauty queen reveals breakup on live TV with ex
When Beauty queen Janine Tugonon and Jaypee Santos appeared in an episode of ABS-CBN's "Kris TV" in April 2013, no one knew they were no longer together. So instead of talking about their sweet moments as a couple, Janine revealed that she is already single and exchanging messages with The Script frontman Danny O'Donoghue—all this with her ex-boyfriend beside her.
Janine was bashed for the awkward TV moment online, with netizens saying she should have kept the details of the breakup to herself, especially in presence of her former flame.
Rosanna Roces got "Showtime" suspended
Rosanna Roces used a guest stint on ABS-CBN's "Showtime" in 2010 as a venue to rant about teachers while giving her comments to a performer for that episode (during the time when "Showtime" was a mainly a talent show).
"Murahin mo yung teacher mo ha," Rossana said when the contestant was unable to answer a question she asked about Jose Rizal. "Ako minura ko teacher ko n'ung 'di n'ya sinagot sa akin yan..." Vice Ganda, then a resident judge of the show, tried to salvage the moment by praising teachers in general, but the damage had been done.
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board suspended "Showtime" for 20 days due to Rosanna's statement.
Michael Fajatin bloopers
Live news programs are a well of awkward TV moments, and no one proves that more than GMA-7 news reporter Michael Fajatin; a simple search on his name on YouTube will explain why. Some of the clips (like the video above) are almost a decade old, but they prove why viewers are captivated with on air fiascos. Like everyone else, even people on television can make mistakes from time to time.
