A different kind of love

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

While it is true that the month of February is famously celebrated by lovers, it could also be an occasion to celebrate other kinds of love, such as love for parents, siblings, friends, other people, one’s country and of course, love for God. In this way, everybody, with or without a romantic partner, can enjoy the month of hearts as well. Even movies have themes showing other kinds of love.

Films/TV specials about Mother Teresa. We love our family, friends, work and even pets but how about others (those that we don’t know)? Where do they belong? If there is anyone worth mentioning when it comes to loving others, that would be Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Makes one wonder how she could have that heart. If you still have no idea about her missions, then check out the several films and documentaries about her life and works.

Gandhi. The film is about Gandhi’s love for country and his countrymen. He desired to make a change using non-violent methods. It worked most of the time but as always, there are people who disagree. That didn’t alarm Gandhi as he continued with the fight. He lived as a hero and died as a hero. How many Gandhis are there?

From Prada to Nada. After their father died, Nora and Mary are about to learn their lesson the hard way. They need to adjust from being rich gals into poor ones. The two are completely different and so they clash most of the time. But sisters will always be sisters, and at the end of the day, they do love each other after all.

The Blind Side. Sad but true, rarely do people see good things in others. Most of the time, a person is judged even before being met. The film shows the exact opposite of this. Leigh Anne sees the good things in Michael Oher, a teenager with a sad past. Despite the constant disapproval of the people around her, she takes her stand and gives Michael a chance to live a good life by becoming his legal guardian. Now, that is having a heart.

3 Idiots. This is a touching movie about surviving the challenges of friendship and the fun of having one. Enter into the circle of Farhan, Raju and Racho, and find out the love that friends can share with one another. Truly, it is not easy finding true friendship; so when you find one, treasure it dearly.

Patch Adams. Dr. Hunter “Patch” Adams’ method of using humor to treat patients may be odd to his co-doctors and superiors. Not for long though, they realized that Dr. Adams has a point. The film is based on a true story about a doctor who treats his patients not just patients but rather like a family whom he cares for.

Iron Man. Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) has it all: Fame, fortune, intelligence, women chasing after him and a lot more. Why would he bother and sacrifice himself to save people? Some people just have that heart to love others and feel responsible for saving them. No matter what Tony’s past is, he changed for the better and that’s what matters.

Lorenzo’s Oil. The greatest pain that parents go through is to see their child suffering, being helplessly sick, not to mention dying. They would rather go through any other life’s trials than that. Their love is truly amazing. Based on a true story, the film is about the struggle of the Odones, as the parents deal with the sickness of their son Lorenzo. (Note: Lorenzo Odones died in 2008.)

To Sir, with Love. Remember what they say about teachers being our second parents? It is truly wonderful to think, and what more to experience, having a teacher who genuinely cares for his students. Mr. Mark Thackeray accepts a teaching job in a school where the so-called “rejects” are. He might have thought of giving up many times but the longer he stays, the more he loves them. So, he decides to stay and make a change.

Films about the Crucifixion of Jesus. Of course, this list won’t be complete without including the greatest love of all. Many films about the death of Jesus Christ have been produced. One of the big ones was The Passion of the Christ, in 2004, which depicts the events during the 12 hours before his death. Watching the film never ceases to bring tears or melt the hearts of viewers.
