Music that sparkles
There’s a lot of good music being created, and it doesn’t matter which musical genre we may be referring to. Whether from the arena of neo-soul that acts like Amy Winehouse mined, or that of indie rock tinged with country that has its pedigree in such musical acts like The Eagles and REM. Here are two bands that definitely know how to make their music sparkle.
Noisettes: Wild Young Hearts (Mercury). Had to order this on Amazon, so I hope it will be released here soon. Think Amy Winehouse or Duffy but as a band that’s got a lot more pop sensibility, and you’ll have some idea of what the “retro-fied,” neo-Motown sound of The Noisettes is all about. The first three tracks of Wild Young Hearts, Don’t Upset the Rhythm and Never Forget You immediately showcase the versatility of this band and just how sparkling, vibrant and enjoyable their music can be. Singer Shingai Shoniwa hails from Zimbabwe, and she’s perfect in setting a visual peg for what the band exemplifies — brash, upbeat, and in fashion! Atticus and 24 Hours are my other top picks, and while there are some fillers, this is still very much worth the purchase.
Lifehouse: Smoke & Mirrors (Geffen/MCA Universal). Formed in late 1996 when the band members, as Blyss, were still in their teens, Lifehouse is now in its 10th year and the guys are still in their twenties. That’s a lot of touring under your belt, and known as a kick-ass rock and roll performing band, they’ve also crafted a host of really radio-friendly hits. With songs that just escape being categorized as indie/alternative country rock, one can only admire just how tight the music is. If one had to grasp for descriptions, think Gin Blossoms, Daughtry, or Matchbox 20, but factor in just how adept the band is at incorporating ready hooks and sing along choruses. All In, Halfway Gone and Crash and Burn are my immediate faves, and I love the Dylanesque Near Life Experience. A real solid set of tunes.
