Liza Soberano compares 'Forgotten Island' voice work to past dramas
MANILA, Philippines — Liza Soberano briefly looked back at her past projects in the Philippines and how they prepared her for voice work in "Forgotten Island."
The new movie from DreamWorks Animation is inspired by Filipino culture, folklore, and mythology, and a majority of the cast and crew have Filipino backgrounds like Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson — better known as H.E.R — and co-director Januel Mercado.
Both actresses, Mercado, and fellow co-director Joel Crawford were all in Manila on August 25 to promote their film ahead of its wide release in September.
While speaking to members of the media, including Philstar.com, Liza was asked how she prepared to voice her character Raissa.
Liza is no stranger to animation having voiced the titular character in "Trese" and the two characters in "Sun Chaser." Both are inspired by Filipino culture, but "Forgotten Island" marks Liza's first animated feature.
"[It was] finding the right balance between a child and being mature," she began, noting how she naturally speaks a youthful sounding voice.
Liza, however, acknowledged that Raissa sounded mature for her age, hence the actress spoke in a deeper voice but still manages to exude a youthful vibe.
"In terms of the emotional depth, I've done a lot of dramatic acting here in the Philippines," she continued. "When it came to the drama of this film, I wanted to make sure it was still rooted in lightheartedness and almost childlike tampuhan."
Liza later shared that she often listened to videos of H.E.R., who voices Jo in the movie to better complement her voice. H.E.R. humorously quipped though that she had done vocal practices in the recording studio.
"Forgotten Island" also features the voices of Lea Salonga, Dolly de Leon, Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy, Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto, Filipino-American actress Amielynn Abellera, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate and Ronny Chieng. It premieres in Philippine cinemas beginning September 23.
