Ruru Madrid waiting for the ‘right timing’to marry Bianca Umali
MANILA, Philippines — Following the wedding of his sister Rere Madrid to cager Kai Sotto, Ruru Madrid said he is also ready to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Bianca Umali, but they are simply waiting for the right time.
“Yes (I’m ready). Bianca and I are just waiting for the right timing,” the Kapuso actor told reporters during an interview on the sidelines of the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2026 presscon. He is part of the Cinemalaya entry “Hand of God” by Mark Duane Angos.
“We’ve already talked about it with our families. To be honest, alam ko rin na parang nakahanda anytime but we still need to have a serious discussion with both of our families,” he added.
When asked if he felt pressured to say “I do” after his sister recently got married, he shared that he and Bianca are not rushing into marriage.
“We definitely talk about it all the time. But it’s really just a matter of finding the right timing. At this point, siyempre we’re doing lots of things na dating pinangarap lang po namin and of course, we want to maximize that.
“But definitely, when it comes to getting married, no one can really say exactly when that will happen. Once the two of us feel that it’s the right time to take that step, then we’ll do it,” he further reflected.
Ruru first learned about Rere’s plans to get married through Bianca, describing his initial reaction as one of surprise.
“But as an older brother, I used to be quite strict with my siblings. Bianca would remind me that my siblings are all grown up now and have their own lives. She made me realize that we should trust them enough to still feel comfortable opening up to us, so I needed to give them space to learn and grow on their own.
“From that moment on, I accepted that my siblings are already adults, and I should let them be. And now, we’re all really close as siblings.”
Ruru will soon become a first-time uncle, as Rere recently revealed that she is expecting a baby boy.
When asked if he believes in the Filipino superstition of “sukob,” Ruru said that he and Bianca do not believe in it.
“As long as maramdaman po namin kung itong taon na to or next year man or sa mga susunod pang mga taon, ‘di natin masasabi.”
Moreover, Ruru is fulfilling one of his dreams of starring in a Cinemalaya film after winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival for his performance in “Green Bones,” alongside Dennis Trillo. He shared that he was inspired by Dennis, as well as Marian Rivera’s work in “Balota,” a 2024 Cinemalaya entry for which she won Best Actress.
Mark Duane’s “Hand of God,” meanwhile, tells the story of a military lieutenant who sets up a collapsible football post in a remote village in the southern Philippines to teach the village kids how to play football. His aim was to gain the trust of a community that has long been suspected of colluding with terrorists, according to the film’s synopsis.
But what begins as a tactical strategy becomes deeply personal when he forms a bond with the children, especially 10-year-old Khaleel, a child soldier in a violent terror group. The child and the soldier soon teach each other to dream bigger, but the realities of war may force them to learn a more devastating lesson.
Ruru hopes the film will inspire a message of peace among audiences, citing its compelling premise as one of the reasons he accepted the project.
Joining Ruru in the cast are Iza Calzado, Ronnie Lazaro, Sue Ramirez, KD Omalin, Jhong Hilario, Cholo Barretto, Edwin Nombre, Rosh Barman and Tyke Sanchez.
Cinemalaya’s nine full-length and 10 short films are currently screening until Aug. 18 at the Red Carpet Cinemas in Shangri-La Plaza, Gateway Cineplex and Ayala Malls Cinemas.
