Flour millers muling magbabayad ng customs duty sa imported wheat

MANILA, Philippines - Bilang patunay ng kanilang suporta sa likod ng liderato pati na rin sa kampanya kontra katiwalian ni Customs Commissioner Angelito “Lito” A. Alvarez, dalawang grupo ng commercial wheat millers ang nag-alok na muling magbayad ng customs duty sa imported wheat.

“The millers are volunteering to pay import duty again to demonstrate our appreciation for the welcome news that Commissioner Alvarez is making headway in his bid to curb corruption, combat smuggling and transform the BoC into an efficient and ethical organization,” wika ni Ric Pinca, pangulo ng Philippine Association of Flour Millers, Inc. (PAFMIL).

Sa isang courtesy call, nanawagan din ang mga miyembro ng PAFMIL at Chamber of Philippine Flour Millers kay Alvarez na kilusin ang muling pag-review sa Executive Order 818, na nag-alis sa three-percent duty sa milling wheat dahil hindi nasunod ang layunin nito.

Isa pa, ang muling pagpataw ng three-percent tariff ay makatutulong na makakalap ng P800 million sa import duty batay sa 2009 import data.

“This additional revenue could help fill the country’s budgetary deficit estimated at almost P200 billion,” wika ni Pinca.

Inilarawan naman ni Alvarez ang alok ng mga miller bilang magandang hakbang lalo pa’t lubhang naaapektuhan ang pangongolekta ng Customs ng tax exemptions at tax credits na sinasamantala ng ilang malaking kompanya.
