PGMA sa DepEd: End Child Labor

Iniutos ni Pangulong Arroyo sa Department of Education (DepEd) na gumawa ng hakbang upang mawakasan ang child labor at maibalik sila sa mga paaralan.

“The role of children is to study, learn and play, not to earn a living at their tender age. I am therefore please that DepEd is working with other government agencies and non-governmental organizations whe­ther local and foreign, to bring back these children to school,” wika pa ng Pangulo.

Dahil dito, lumagda sa isang kasunduan ang DepEd sa World Vision Development Foundation upang maibalik sa paara­lan ang tinatayang 800,000 child laborers sa bansa.

Ayon kay DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus, sa pa­ma­magitan ng ABK2 Initiative o Pag-aaral ng mga Bata sa Kinabu­kasan at WVDF ay magka­tuwang nilang lala­banan ang child labor sa bansa upang muling mag-aral ang mga batang ito.

Ang ABK2 ay isang 4-year project na pinon­dohan ng US Department of Labor na ang layunin ay makatulong na maba­wasan ang exploitation sa child labor sa Pilipinas.

Sinasabing talamak ang child labor sa sugar cane plantation, domestic work, pyrotechnics business, mining, quarrying, sex trade at pamumu­lot ng basura. (Rudy Andal)
