Sharon Cuneta opens up about the highs and lows of married life
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan as a married couple.
The Megastar’s recent guesting on my 20-minute GMA showbiz-oriented program “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” for “The Talk” segment allowed viewers the opportunity to discover more about her not only as an actress but also in her real-life roles as a wife to Kiko and a mother to KC Concepcion, Frankie, Miel and Miguel Pangilinan.
Sharon admitted to experiencing the highs and lows of her now three-decade-long marriage to Kiko. She described their journey as “like a rollercoaster because there was a time in the past when we were in a very bad state. Now, it’s so different. We are totally peaceful, in love, and happy.”
I reminded her that 30 years ago, she was already the Megastar and Kiko was an emerging political star, yet she made it clear that no major adjustments were made despite her popularity.
“Nothing difficult because Kiko is the kind of man who’s very secure with himself, and he’s very supportive as a husband, and up to this day, kung ano ‘yung achievements n’ya, they are very different from mine. So, may plusses sa kanya, meron sa akin, at meron rin cons. So, we complement each other.”
Whenever they are in public places like restaurants, her physical security is Kiko’s foremost concern. “No, he’s not bothered (by people wanting to get close and pose for pictures). In terms of security lang, he would always make sure about my physical safety, so, no, he’s not bothered at all. That’s why I married him.”
Sharon admitted that their relationship is not always a bed of roses. In fact, she revealed that their marriage nearly fell apart.
“Maraming beses na (muntik maghiwalay). S’yempre, it’s been a journey, but he never let go, even if I wanted to. And lagi ko naman na-re-realize after, ‘Oo nga naman. Bakit nga naman?’ Siguro I had a lot of baggage. So, in a lot of ways, I was scared, and over the years, it took 30 years, but no naman earlier, but he made me feel safe,” she said.
Despite life’s ups and downs, Sharon and Kiko stick together even when facing controversies involving them or their children.
“We’re one for all, all for one, especially me and Kiko because we know each other so well. There’s a lot of respect between us. There’s a lot of faith we have in each other, and then God.”
Sharon smiled when I brought up the memes that circulated on social media after an incident involving her husband and former boyfriend, Sen. Robin Padilla. To recall, the two senators had a heated exchange after Kiko allegedly raised his voice at Robin during a Senate session. I asked Sharon for her reaction to the memes about the matter that referenced her romantic past with Robin, and she said, “No comment. Ganito na lang, ‘Uy, ex ko. Uy, husband ko. Tapos na. Stops there. I don’t want to comment because for us, it was a non-issue.”
Issues about past loves may cause jealousy, and Sharon said that while Kiko may not seem jealous, it’s just that he doesn’t show it. However, Sharon is the opposite of her husband. “Oo (selosa ako). Sa baggage ko ba naman,” she laughed.
Meanwhile, Sharon stars in the family drama series “Honor Thy Mother,” now streaming on Prime Video. Yours truly had a cameo in it and got the chance to do a scene with the Megastar. I truly appreciate how she made me comfortable while we were shooting that scene.
