March 22, 2025: Earth Hour - 8:30?to 9:30?PM

PERSPECTIVE - Charry Ballescas - The Freeman

Tonight, Saturday, from 8:30?– 9:30?PM, would you like to switch off your house lights and share 60 minutes of your time to join the whole world mark this year’s Earth Hour?

Started as a lights-out event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, Earth Hour has since grown into a global grassroots movement, with millions in over 185 countries and territories turning off their lights at the same time and for an hour, as an expression of their support and commitment for Mother Nature and Planet Earth.

Earth Hour has inspired individuals and organizations throughout the world to take action to protect and care for the earth and the environment.

This year’s Earth Hour theme is "Create the Biggest Hour for Earth" with all asked and encouraged not only to share an hour for a better planet but to connect with nature beyond the hour.

Last year’s Earth Hour theme was “Give an Hour for Earth.”

Previous themes for the past years included; 2023: "#TimeOutForNature," 2022: "Shape our Future," 2021: "Virtual Spotlight," and 2020: "Rock the World."

Here in the Philippines, for this year, as energy and water are interrelated, Filipinos have been asked as well by the Department of Energy to include water conservation during Earth Hour with the theme: “Switch Off and Secure Water for All” - Earth Hour 2025!

There are those who question whether the Earth Hour, a global initiative organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, can change the world.

Can an hour of lights out really change the world?

Imagine one household turning off their lights for 60 minutes this Saturday. That household will be saving an hour worth from their regular electric bill.

Moreover, if the household decides to spend the lights-out time with the family, one hour of bonding will be an added precious bonus.

Furthermore, if there are children among those who will join the hour lights-off, the activity can serve as a valuable learning session about the importance of conserving and properly using energy to protect our earth.

If the sky is clear during the Earth Hour, that will be an added occasion to appreciate the darkness/the evening celestial spectacle of stars to delight the eyes.

Imagine more than one household, imagine millions of households all throughout the world, simultaneously joining to switch off their lights for an hour this March 22!

Can you now understand the meaningful change an hour of lights off can contribute to protect our earth?

An hour or more for Mother Earth may also encourage more people to realize the value/urgency to switch to non-renewable energy sources to better protect our planet and help avert/mitigate global warming!

Spending 60 minutes doing something positive for the planet can turn into thousands and millions of hours of action and awareness that there is still time to reverse nature loss by 2030.

Just an hour for the Earth this Saturday can go a long way not only for the present but for the future generations as well.

Tonight, would you like to do something good for our Mother Nature, our Planet Earth?

If you have not yet joined the Earth Hour at all, why not start this Saturday and do something positive for our Planet Earth, for our people, for this generation and the next?

Aside from lights-off, why not spend that Earth Hour doing something you really love to do and with those you love?

Earth Hour can be a creative, selfless, collaborative initiative with positive impact not only for our people and our planet but for you and your loved ones as well!

For Earth Hour-newcomers, experience something novel while positively contributing to our planet, our people!

For all who will join Earth Hour tonight, thank you for your hour (even more) for Planet Earth!
