Dimsum Break to expand via franchise, partnerships

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu-based Harbour City Dimsum House Co., Inc., (HCDHCI) is going to lead the introduction of dimsum fast food chain concept in the country, by expanding the number of Dimsum Break outlets in strategic locations nationwide.

HCDHCI, the company that operates three Chinese restaurant outlet brands—Ding Qua Qua, Harbour City, and Dimsum Break, is looking at expanding its operations via the strong presence of Dimsum Break in the Philippines, tapping on the effective franchise package as well as partnership ventures.

In a press conference, HCDHCI financial comptroller and vice president Edward U. Kokseng, he said that as of now, Dimsum Break brand is driving the company’s growth, as it effectively hit the consumers’ past pace lifestyle and embrace the fast food concept, while keeping the authentic dimsum quality.

From creating a household name in Chinese restaurant industry—Ding Qua Qua, and Harbour City, the company decided to venture into the fast food dimsum concept and opened the Dimsum Break brand in 1996.

In September 2012, Dimsum Break conquered the highly competitive Metro Manila market, and opened its first Manila branch at SM North Edsa, the second branch followed this year, with the opening of the Claro M. Recto Avenue outlet.

Today, there are 11 Dimsum Break branches all over the country, Kokseng said the company is looking at an aggressive expansion plan for the chain, but it is particular in finding a good location for every expansion.

Aside from focusing on the Metro Manila, and Luzon area, Kokseng said aggressive expansion plan is also being considered in the Visayas and Mindanao areas.

Recently, the company announced Dimsum Break’s no frills setup to give way to a clear customer profile.

Over the years, Dimsum Break has also helped reshape the traditional perception of Chinese restaurants being pricey. The chain has also introduced its delivery and drive-thru services.

HCDHCI is a parthership with the Kokseng and Uytengsu families of Cebu. The group started the Ding How Dimsum House restaurant in Colon street in 1969.

In Hong Kong, dimsum was usually taken in the afternoon as a complement to tea, and not considered a main meal. Ding How pioneered the concept of serving dimsum all day, for snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The company, however retained its three Chinese restaurant brands up to this time, Ding Qua Qua, located at JY Square mall in Lahug, and two Harbour City restaurants at SM City Cebu and Ayala Center.

According to Kokseng, the company is focused on expanding the branches of Dimsum Break, as the company noted stronger demand for fast food dimsum serving in the country. /JOB (FREEMAN)
