                    [Title] => Drilon denies offering committee chairmanships
                    [Summary] => Senate President Franklin Drilon belied yesterday claims that he entered into an agreement with opposition senators for juicy committee chairmanships in the chamber.

Drilon was reacting to a statement by Sen. Edgardo Angara that an arrangement was made between the majority and the minority lawmakers.

Angara had said Drilon entered into an agreement with Senate Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III, in which the majority was prepared to offer the minority the chairmanships of the Blue Ribbon Committee and the committees on justice, education and energy.

This was the reaction of Senators Ralph Recto and Francis Pangilinan to claims of the opposition that up to five members of the majority coalition would defect to the minority, enabling it to wrest the leadership of the Senate from Franklin Drilon.

"That is an empty threat. I don’t see that happening," Recto said.

Pangilinan said that a majority senator would shift to the other side only if his political survival is at stake.

The divorce bill might have easy sailing in the House as predicted by Speaker Manuel Villar, but it will definitely pass through the proverbial eye of the needle before it could be approved by the Senate.

Senate President Blas Ople and Senate Majority Leader Franklin Drilon both opposed the measure, giving it very little chance of passage.

"I don't think it will pass the Senate. Most of the senators are strongly Catholic," Ople said.

Drilon said he would personally vote against the measure. [DatePublished] => 2000-02-01 00:00:00 [ColumnID] => 133272 [Focus] => 0 [AuthorID] => 1297981 [AuthorName] => Efren Danao [SectionName] => Headlines [SectionUrl] => headlines [URL] => ) ) )
