Kasparov tumulong din sa mga biktima ni ‘Yolanda’

MANILA, Philippines - Nangako si dating world chess champion Garry Kasparov ng $10,000 para sa mga biktima ng bagyong ‘Yolanda’.

Dumating kahapon si Kasparov sa Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) kasama si FIDE Secretary General Ignatius Leong sakay ng Thai Airways TG 620 para sa isang pagbisita bilang bahagi ng kanyang hinahangad na 2014 FIDE presidency.

“I’m here to meet with the Philippine Chess Fe-deration about my bid to presidency in FIDE. But the current situation in the country, the horrible catastrophe, I think it is appropriate to commit 10 thousand US dollars as help,” sabi ni Kasparov.

Si Kasparov ay sinalubong sa airport nina National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pitchay, Grandmaster Eugene Torre at NCFP Secretary General Jayson Gonzales.

Inaasahang makakalaban ni Kasparov para sa FIDE presidential race ang pangulo nitong si Kirsan Ilyumzhinov na hangad ang kanyang ikaanim na sunod na termino.

Nauna nang bumisita si Kasparov sa Indonesia, Singapore at Thailand kung saan niya tinalakay ang global chess development sa Asian region pati na ang kanyang ambisyon sakaling mailuklok sa FIDE.

“You know, this coming FIDE election is a competition for better ideas,” sabi ni Kasparov.

Dumating sa bansa si Kasparov noong 1992 nang magtayo ng chess plaza sa Luneta.
