Cojuangco vs Lopez sa POC elections?

MANILA, Philippines -  Isang ‘dream match’ ang maaaring matungha­yan sa loob mismo ng Phi­lippine Olympic Committee.

Kung mangyayari ito, tatapatan ni POC first vice president Manny Lopez si Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, ang POC president sa na­karaang walong taon.

Minandohan ni Cojuangco ang POC sapul noong 2004 nang ibigay sa kanya ang POC presiden­cy via acclamation.

Sa kanyang panalo noong 2008, tinalo ni Cojuangco si shooting chief Ar­turo Macapagal, ang half brother ni dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, sa pamamagitan ng 21-19 boto.

Nakatakda ang POC elections, idinadaos tuwing may Olympic Games, sa Nobyembre.

Sinabi ni Cojuangco na hangad niya ang kanyang ikatlong sunod na termino, at ayon sa kanyang mga kaalyado, walang haha­mon sa 77-anyos na politiko.

Si Cojuangco ay ang nakababatang kapatid ni dating President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino at tiyu­hin ni President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Ang 51-anyos namang si Lopez, nagsilbing Chef De Mission ng Philippine Team sa 2012 London Olym­pics, anak ni dating Ma­nila Mayor at dating Philippine Sports Commission chairman Gemiliano “Mel” Lopez.

Ang mga Lopez ang namahala sa Amateur Bo­­xing Association of the Philippines sa mahabang panahon.

“If we don’t make drastic changes in our system now, we won’t progress, we will retrogress,” ani Lopez. “We can’t separate politics from sports but politics should be one that is tolerable, that is good and democratic and has the will to fight the mafia of sports.”
