Saludar, Barriga bigo sa quarterfinals ng Olympic qualifying

BAKU, Azerbaijan --- Yumukod sa mas eksper­yen­sadong kalaban sina 2010 Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar at light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga sa quarterfinal round ng AIBA World Bo­xing Championships dito.

Natalo si Saludar kay American two-time Olympian Rau’ Shee Warren, 12-22, samantalang nabigo si Barriga kay Chinese Olympic and World Champion Zou Shiming, 5-12.

Ang naturang mga ka­biguan nina Saludar at Bar­riga ang tuluyan nang tu­mapos sa kampanya ng bansa sa nasabing tor­neong tumatayong qualifying event para sa 2012 Olympic Games sa London.

Si Warren ang unang American boxer na nakapasok sa tatlong Olympics.

Kinuha ng 24-anyos na si Warren ang 7-2 lamang sa first round hanggang ibaon si Saludar sa 16-8 sa second round.

Ipinoste naman ni Zou ang 4-1 bentahe sa ope­ning round nila ni Barriga bago makaungos sa se­cond round, 3-2, at third round, 5-2.

Bagamat natalo sina Saludar at Barriga, maaari pa rin silang makakuha ng Olympic ticket sa isa pang qualifying event sa Kazakhstan sa Marso ng 2012 kasabay ng women’s qualifying meet.

Samantala, nagparamdam naman si Ricky Vargas ng posibleng pagbaba sa kanyang puwesto bilang pangulo ng Amateur Bo­xing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

“I am personally disappointed. Maybe its time for a leadership change. We just could not deliver. Still hoping though,” ani Vargas sa kanyang saloobin.
