Pangulong Arroyo panauhin sa WBC Convention

Personal na bubuksan ngayong umaga ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ang 45th World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention sa Manila Hotel.

Tampok sa naturang okasyon ang pagbibigay kay Pangulong Arroyo, sasamahan nina Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim at Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chairman Eric Buhain, ni WBC president Jose Sulaiman ng Special Award.

“The award is bestowed only to the top personalities in the world,” wika ng 75-anyos na si Sulaiman. “We have given this award to the late Pope John Paul II and we are honoring President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo because she is a strong president and has the heart of a boxer.”

Ito ang ikatlong pagkakataon na pamamahalaan ng bansa ang nasabing WBC Annual Convention na dadaluhan rin nina WBC Secretary General Gabriel Peñagaricano at WBC Ratings Appeals Committee Chairman Bismarck Morales.

Nakatakda ring tumanggap ng parangal sina Buhain at dating WBC secretary-general Atty. Rodrigo Salud.

Dalawa pang boxing events ang inilatag para sa WBC Convention na tinatampukan ng laban ni OPBF lightfly champion Juanito Rubillar kay Korean Byung Joo Lee sa Nobyembre 12 sa San Andres Sports Center at ang upakan nina Jimrex Jaca at Ryu Miyagi ng Japan sa Nobyembre 14 sa SM Mall of Asia.

Samantala, gagawin naman ng kampo ni Armenian fighter Vic Darchinyan ang lahat para manalo sa itatakdang purse bid upang maidaos ang super flyweight title eliminator nito kay Filipino Z “The Dream” Gorres sa Sydney, Australia.

Napunta sa purse bid ang Darchinyan-Gorres eliminator, ang mananalo ay hahamon kay International Boxing Federation (IBF) titlist Dimitri Kirilov ng Russia na hawak rin ni American trainer Freddie Roach, matapos umayaw si promoter Gary Shaw. (RCadayona)
