Asian Women's Boxing Championship: Martinez tumang

Tumanggap ang kauna-unahang Asian Women’s Boxing Championship lightwelter weight champion Mitchell Martinez ng token na nagkakahalaga ng P10,000 mula kay Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny Lopez bilang pagkilala sa kanyang tagumpay sa nakaraang tournament noong Agosto 25-31 sa Bangkapi, Bangkok, Thailand.

"This amount maybe small because ABAP does not have enough budget but we heartedly give it to you for the honor you have given the country at a time when everyone seems to be feeling low. Congratulations, may you be more success in your future endeavor," ani Lopez bunga ng ikaapat na puwestong tinapos ng kanyang koponan sa kabila ng apat na buwang pagte-training pa lamang ng kanyang koponan para sa pioneer international women’s boxing competition na nilahukan ng 10 bansa at 60 boksingero.

Sinabi ni Lopez na ang performance na ito ni Martinez ang posibleng magbigay sa bansa ng kauna-unahang gintong medalya sa Olypmics.

Tanging ang 25-anyos na Police officer na nakabase sa Camp Crame PNP Headquarters Support Services ang nag-iisang Pinay gold medalist sa seven-women boxers na ipinadala ng Pacific Concrete at Asphalt Mix at ALI Sportswear sa boxingfest na ito. Ang tagumpay ni Martinez ang naglagay sa kanya para maging seeded sa National Open na nakatakda sa Iriga sa susunod na buwan, ngunit ang ibang aspirante ay sasailalim sa elimination round bilang preparasyon para sa posibleng slot sa November Scranton, Pennsylvannia First World Women’s Boxing Championships o kaya’y sa 2002 Pusan Asian Games at sa 2004 Athens Olympics.
