9-man boxing team nagtungo sa Athens

Lumipad ang siyam-kataong miyembro ng Team Philippines patungong Athens, Greece kamakalawa ng gabi para sumabak sa 2001 Acropolis Cup.
Ang koponan ay binubuo halos ng mga bagitong fighters na pamumunuan ni Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny Lopez na diretsong lumipad mula sa World Championships na ginanap sa Belfast, Ireland noong nakaraang Linggo.
Ang koponan ay babanderahan nina light flyweight Lhyven Salazar, flyweight Rene Williams, bantamweight Freddie Gamu, featherwieght Florencio Ferrer, welterweight David Gopong at middleweight Maximo Tabancura. Tatayong coaches sina Vicente Arcenal at Elmer Pamisa, habang referee-judge si Ernesto Pegue.
"We are expecting rough sailing in this tournament for we were told that most of those who joined the world championships will be coming in this tournament. However, the boys are prepared for this event. They had their proper training for this world-ranking tourney," wika ni Arcenal.
Ang RP squad na ito ang ikatlong koponan na bibigyan ng international exposure na sagot ng Philippine Sports Commisison, Pacific Heights at Adidas Phils., ngayong taon.
Ito rin bale ang kauna-unahang pagkakataon na sumabak ang Philippine team sa annual tournament na ito na tinaguriang isa sa pinakamahigpit na tournaments sa Europe.
