Shirley Kuan reveals ‘last straw’ that led to resignation as Bea Alonzo’s manager
MANILA, Philippines — Talent manager Shirley Kuan has revealed the incident that prompted her to resign as actress Bea Alonzo’s talent manager, ending their long-standing professional relationship.
For the first time, Shirley faced members of the entertainment media to address the allegations and criticisms hurled against her, including those surrounding her relationship with Bea.
One of the issues she clarified was why she ultimately decided to step down as Bea’s talent manager.
According to Shirley, the “last straw” involved an event she had personally negotiated and closed for Bea.
“The third trigger point, that was the last straw. There was this event, that’s my deal,” Shirley said.
“I closed this event deal. I was talking to the client and preparing this event. I was told by the client that I’m disinvited, and I already knew what happened even when the client didn’t want to tell me. I already knew who it is.”
Shirley admitted that while she did not get angry, she was deeply offended by what happened.
“Hindi ako nagalit, but I’ll be a hypocrite if I tell you I’m not offended because this was never done to me. Wala naman akong kasalanan, what have I done?” she said.
She added that she respected the client’s decision but could not accept being excluded from an event she had worked on.
“I told the client, ‘Don’t worry, I’m not going, if that’s your request.’ But that’s very offensive and that’s not something I can accept.”
Following the incident, Shirley said she immediately confronted Bea and informed her that she was stepping down as her manager.
“That’s the last straw. After I told her that, and she said she didn’t know about it. ‘Okay, now I’m telling you. And this very moment and as of this very day, I’m no longer your manager,’” Shirley recalled.
Shirley also opened up about the criticism she has received, particularly allegations involving her marriage to businessman Vincent Co.
She expressed frustration over what she felt was a lack of support from Bea amid the issues being thrown her way.
“Ang sabi ko, hindi ko alam kung bakit ako sinisiraan non-stop. Bea, you never defended me. Hindi mo naman ako ipinagtanggol,” Shirley said.
She maintained that she had never interfered in Bea’s personal life.
“Maski privately, you could have told whoever that is the truth, wala akong alam diyan, hindi ako nakialam ever (sa personal life ni Bea),” she added.
Shirley also explained why she had remained silent about her resignation for some time.
She said she had promised Bea that she would not make a public announcement about their professional separation.
“I promised her I’m not going to make any announcement over any resignation. But I was given no choice but to defend myself because enough is enough,” she said.
“I kept quiet, I kept my promise, until it came out. Was it yesterday? I was in the news everywhere.”
Meanwhile, Shirley revealed that a fellow talent manager had allegedly warned her about people who wanted to create trouble for her.
“Last Friday, I got a call from a friend of mine who’s also a talent manager. She said she’s friends with a certain individual and, this is unbelievable, ‘Kaya mo bang awayin si SK?’” Shirley recalled.
Shirley said she immediately reached out to Bea after receiving the information.
“I said, ‘This person called me, may gustong awayin daw ako? Why is this happening?’” she said.
“I did tell her na tinawagan 'yung kaibigan ko at inuutusan na awayin ako,” she added.
Following Shirley’s resignation, Bea tapped Chris Cahilig as her new interim agent.
