The price of "development"

Ligaya Rabago - The Freeman

The conservation of our country's architectural legacy is an issue that requires immediate attention and a specific forum for discussion. Every time I visit historical and culturally significant locations, I am deeply frustrated by the state of our built environment today. I've always been fascinated by historical buildings, which has made it possible for me to recognize the complex narratives and fine craftsmanship that are contained within their walls. However, the intrinsic value these structures add to our national identity is frequently threatened by the unrelenting march of commercial development. When we put short-term financial gain ahead of the long-term spirit of our history, we must consider what we really lose.

Famous sites like the San Sebastian Church and the Rizal Monument in the Philippines are experiencing a "visual massacre" as tall condominiums destroy their architectural integrity and solemnity. Art deco crown jewels in historic neighborhoods like Escolta are often in danger of being demolished to make room for glass towers, sacrificing artistic intent for projects driven by profit. Even UNESCO sites like Vigan suffer from careless alterations, where contemporary materials and commercial signage gradually obliterate our concrete ties to the past.

The neoclassical Compañia Maritima in Cebu is a neglected ruin in the Visayas, a crown jewel that is currently caught between legal disputes and modern redevelopment. This visual massacre also encompasses the downtown area, where the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño's architectural and spiritual solemnity are increasingly overshadowed by tall glass developments. In the meantime, commercial signage and careless alterations threaten to obscure the art deco and beaux-arts narratives of Iloilo's historic Calle Real. These local examples demonstrate how we undermine the very architectural heritage that defines the essence of our islands when we treat our Visayan sites of memory as nothing more than roadblocks to advancement.

Strategic urban planning that sets aside particular areas for tall commercial buildings away from our historic heartlands is desperately needed. The government can prevent contemporary skyscrapers from overshadowing or competing with the magnificence of our cultural structures by drawing these distinct boundaries. This methodical approach to city construction preserves the sightlines and visual sanctity of our national landmarks while enabling economic growth. A monument loses its impact when it is concealed behind glass and steel, so we must stop the "cluttering" of the skyline that currently jeopardizes the aesthetic appreciation of heritage sites. A well-planned Filipino city must have both progress and preservation as separate but complementary components.

Before the silent witnesses of our history and the collective memories they hold are entirely obscured by the shadows of contemporary commercial buildings, we must take decisive action. We essentially deprive future generations of the crucial chance to establish a connection with their own cultural roots and ancestral tales by permitting these landmarks to be obscured or demolished. In a world that is changing quickly, preserving these sites now guarantees that the Philippines' artistic and historical soul will continue to be a vibrant source of pride rather than a forgotten footnote.

Because these structures are the physical reminders of the hardships and sacrifices that shaped our national identity, preserving our architectural legacy is a race against time. In order to prevent future generations from being deprived of their cultural heritage, we must prevent these historical narratives from disappearing under the wave of commercial development. We guarantee that the "better glory" of our past will continue to uplift the Filipino spirit by pledging to a future in which contemporary advancement respects the artistry of the past.
