Echoes of yesterday, a story told

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago - The Freeman

My encounters with former ambassador Francisco “Frank” Benedicto were fleeting, yet they shimmer with a poignant nostalgia. As a cultural worker, I sometimes found myself at events and functions, where brief interactions with him left an indelible mark. Though our acquaintanceship was limited, each meeting evoked a sense of warmth and shared purpose. These moments, now distant memories, whisper of a time when connections, however brief, held a special significance, stirring deep emotions.

My knowledge of him, especially regarding his background as a businessman or his ties to a family of Chinese descent, remains very limited. These details, obscured by distance and fleeting encounters, leave a gentle ache of curiosity and unfulfilled understanding. Still, the vague impressions and the warmth of those brief moments continue to linger in my memory, reminding me of the quiet, unspoken stories that remain just out of reach.

It's not surprising that I have rich and profound stories about the good ambassador from my husband, who has been entrusted with running the school he has founded in 2000, the Benedicto College. For 15 years now, my husband started as a school principal and gradually climbed the professional ladder, eventually taking full command as the director of the college's academic operations. Over the years, he has witnessed firsthand the remarkable growth and transformation of the institution. His stories weave a rich tapestry of dedication, leadership, and the quiet, steadfast passion that has guided the college through the years.

The good ambassador’s deep concern for the education of the youth truly shines through his actions. His dedication paved the way for the establishment of the college, just a few years after his retirement from government service. But long before that, he had spent decades supporting public education by donating school buildings, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to shaping brighter futures for the younger generations. His passion for education and service is a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to know his story.

His love for the college is undeniable, evident in how he never missed the milestones that mark its journey. One such occasion is the founder’s days, where he always made sure to express his deep gratitude to the employees, making his birthday even more meaningful through their collective celebration. Every Christmas, he would join the employees’ gatherings, celebrating together with the rest of the Benedicto family. His unwavering presence and heartfelt appreciation speak volumes of his genuine dedication and the special place the college holds in his heart.

As a visionary leader, he has always been unwavering in his belief that education must be a powerful force, empowering every student to contribute meaningfully to their families after graduation. He deeply believes in the transformational power of education, a conviction shaped by his own struggles to balance his college studies in evening classes while working in their family business during the mornings. This challenging juggling act went on for years, driven by his relentless determination to earn a college diploma. His personal journey underscores his commitment to fostering opportunities for others to succeed and to harness the true potential of education as a catalyst for change.

The heartfelt gratitude from his scholars and graduates stands as a powerful testament to the ambassador’s remarkable character. His influence extends beyond mere service, leaving a legacy of authentic connection and inspiring leadership that will forever resonate in the hearts of all he touched.
