Demons among us

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez - The Freeman

The bodies of Geneva Lopez and her Israeli boyfriend, Yitshak Cohen, were found in Capas, Tarlac, on Saturday morning. They have been missing for two weeks. According to the investigation, the two were to meet a broker because they were interested in buying 20.5 hectares of land in Armenia, Tarlac. This is when they went missing. The CIDG caught persons of interest who may be involved in the murder of the couple. Two former police officers, a broker, and another are already in the custody of the CIDG. Several guns, bullets, and a grenade were also found in their car. For now, they will be charged with violation of RA 10591 related to the firearms. They are not yet considered suspects in the murder of the two.

The burning car of the couple was first found in Capas, Tarlac. According to Cohen's brother, they were going to meet the broker to get the title of the said land because it was paid for several years ago. It looks like the details are slowly coming out. The persons of interest they have in custody should be thoroughly investigated. They include two ex-cops. Why am I not surprised?

The owner of the land should be investigated and should know if payment has been made. The broker involved in the sale should be thoroughly questioned. It is a known fact they were going to meet the broker when they disappeared. The car was then found burning in a field. Their bodies were then found with an initial autopsy revealing they were both shot twice. This crime was planned, it didn't just happen. So the punishment must be more severe for the perpetrators.

Some demons walk among us. Those who do not have a good bone in their body. The CIDG investigation must yield results. I remember some famous crimes similar to this one. The kidnapping and killing of two students of UP Los Baños where the woman was raped before being killed. The perpetrators are in prison. The disappearance of Catherine Camilon who so far has not been found. The policeman who became the main suspect is free because the case against him was dismissed for lack of evidence. The PNP will file an appeal. Then there is the old case of Cochise Bernabe and Beebom Costañes. The two were forcibly taken by armed men believed to be police in 1990. Their bodies were found in a warehouse. The supposed mastermind was given an executive clemency by then-president Arroyo after 19 years in prison. Was justice achieved by the families of the slain? I doubt it.

One cannot be blamed for the exasperation felt in situations like these. I hope the investigation does not suffer from a lack of evidence. We are all helpless against the demons walking among us. Some demons are even former police officers.
