Odilao’s Bahug Bahug sa Mactan ’80 cast

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The second year of the Bahug Bahug sa Mactan with David Odilao, then regional director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Region 7, leading the event,  sought the counsel of true and genuine Cebuano historians: Dr. Resil Mojares, Ph.D. (now National Artist on Literature)and D.M. Estabaya for the historical research.

Mr. Bert Alpasa as Lapu-Lapu, Mr. Danny Weineke as Fernando de Magallanes, Engr. Jose Sala as Giovanni Antonio Pigafetta, Ms. Rose Briones as Bulakna (wife of Lapu-Lapu), Major Ciriaco Canete as Datu Mangal (father of Lapu-Lapu), Mr. Joey Guingguing as the interpreter, with the Philippine Army 3rd Infantry Division, and the Doce Paris Club as warriors.

The tribes: Tribo Tagapulo (Cebu Central Colleges now UC)led by Martini Biton as Datu Lintogon, Tribo Suba-An (Cebu School of Arts and Trades, now CTU) led by Reynaldo Bolatete as Datu Sampung Baha, Tribo Tighabagat (Cebu Institute of Technology) led Valentino Abarquez as Datu Sinipsipan, Tribo Taga-Bato (Southwestern University)led by Danny Laynol as Datu Dumangsul Abdul-Dinagsa, Tribo Taga Pikas-Dagat (University of San Carlos) led by Rey Bonjoc as Balialho, Tribo Tindak Bukid (University of Southern Philippines) led by Antonio Padriga Jr. as Sandigan and Tribo Maktan (Barangay Maktan) led by Basilio Oyao. It was directed by Assistant Regional Director Loreto M. Palapos. Coordination was Mrs. Fredeswinda T. Mendoza, continuity by Mr. Namor F. Balandra, musical score by Evencio B. Gallego, sound by Jesus Labrador, and sound effects by Emilio Cabatingan Jr.

The utter display of historical ignorance which is the by-product of arrogance during the supposedly memorable 500th-year celebration (2021) by a guest, frustratingly compounded by the applause of those present is murdering Lapu-Lapu’s soul.

The wise always seek the counsel of the wisdom of the old. Sir Boy’s guidance is a must, Lapu-Lapu City officials must humble themselves and see the light of the flame keepers of Cebuano history and pride. Why stupidly listen to pseudo or fake historians from Imperial Manila, saboteurs of the Cebuano heritage and history, when the Old Guards of Cebuano history are there to guide us?

God bless Cebu, long live the Cebuanos.
