Transitions and changes

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

It has been a week since our newly-elected officials took their seats in their respective offices. I have to admit it has been chaotic. Since most of the people are new, there is an issue of what offices to use. Others include what are the fixtures available, documents and contracts to review, and who are the personnel to retain and remove. The absence of a smooth transition made it hard for the incoming officials to sit without any problem. We are all waiting for things to settle down, give it a month or two.

How I wish we did not have to go through this all. Sometimes it feels like democracy has been dead and the elections were useless. Why do we elect officials when they can't even accept defeat? If our losing officials have some sportsmanship, there would be no need of bickering against one another or stripping bare of the offices that they have left. The best that they can do is to support the plans of those chosen by the people. After all, that is what all this freedom is for, right?

I can't seem to comprehend how these people, supposedly of much higher intellect than us ordinary ones, go about their own personal interest when they should be serving the people. My advice to those who have transactions at the city or town halls, don't go yet unless you want to risk it. It is as crazy as it gets every day when all the confusion and transitions ongoing. Give it a month or two before they all get used to what they are doing.

Even new department heads feel lost in the course of their work. I talked to some of those who just assumed office and they seem to be helpless in finding solutions to the metro's leading problems; traffic and garbage. They need a boost and more innovative ideas coming in; of course these things could come in from the outside. It would have been better if there was a period for a small on-the-job training from the previous administration so they won't feel lost. But then again, politics divides us all.

It is time for this mindset of dirty politics to rest. We all need a unified government system that will propel us into progress. Yes, I know it sounds all so motherhood but this is reality. Either we accept it or be apathetic and watch this society wither to the ground.

Next week will be another week of more transitions and more changes. We, too, must also adjust but we could all look at this with a positive outlook. They have been chosen, so I guess they must prove themselves worthy of every vote.
