The leaders of Oslob, Cebu
The town of Oslob was originally called "Toslob" meaning to dip, years later the word T was dropped and now carries its present name.
Its original town center was a place called Daan Lungsod. It was however transferred in 1879 to the present "poblacion" upon the wishes of its first parish priest, Fr. Juan Aragoneo.
The following served as chief executives of Oslob, Cebu, which is 117 kilometers away from Cebu City: Meliton Rendon, Juan Luna, Ireneo Rendon, Macario Culanag, Ramon Rendon, Policarpio Ondiano, Esteban Cerna, Patricio Mision, Mariano Rendon, Juan O. Luna, Mamerto Mision, and Jose Tumulak.
In 1964, the following were elected as officials of Oslob, Cebu: Jose D. Tumulak, Mayor, Ireneo T. Luna, Melchor S. Cuerpo, Municipal Secretary, Fermin Laborte, Judge, Pedro S. Villarin, Treasurer, Narciso Olis, Chief of Police, Dr. Maria Pasiliao, Health Officer.
As municipal councilors: Apolonio Abines Sr., Ireneo Rendon, Silvino Figues, Raymundo Erauda, Esteban Laurente, Bibiano Lunor, Antonio Luna and Ildefonso Rizon.
The sons of Councilor Apolonio Abines Sr. (he died in the1970's) who was once a political lieutenant of Mayor Jose Tumulak rose to govern Oslob and the 2nd Congressional District of Cebu for decades. Apolonio Sr. was elected councilor of Oslob from 1959 to 1963, 1964 to 1967) then as vice mayor from 1968 to 1971.
Apolonio Abines Jr. succeeded the long time mayor of Oslob, Jose Tumulak. Abolonio Jr, also became Vice Governor of Cebu. The brother of Apolonio Jr., Crisologo "Sol" Abines became Congressman of the 2nd Congressional District of Cebu starting in 1987 (the first election after Marcos was exiled and democracy restored in 1986).
Crisologo "Sol" Abines, a member of Cebu's Big Four, supported the gubernatorial bid of then Congressman Pablo Paras Garcia in 1995.
In 2007, Sol Abines ran for Congress and was challenged by Pablo P. Garcia, who briefly retired from politics in 2004 after serving three terms as governor of Cebu. Abines lost to Garcia in the May 2007 elections, the following year, Crisologo Abines died.
In 1998, the wife of Crisologo Abines, Dr. Priscilla Abines, the mayor of Oslob at that time ran for Congress to succeed her husband who was prohibited by term limit to seek for another term. A daughter of Vice Governor Apolonio Abines Jr. by the name of Lucy, ran as the congressional candidate of the Liberal Party in 1998.
Dr. Abines who ran under the then very popular PROMDI Party of former Cebu Governor Emilio "Lito" Osmena Jr. who ran for president, lost to Lawyer Simeon Kintanar, the then National Telecommunications Commissioner at that time. Kintanar, who defeated Abines in the 1998 elections thereafter served the 2nd Congressional District for three terms. Kintanar, who belongs to the famous Kintanar clan of Argao was mentored by Gov. Lito Osmena, it was the latter who endorsed his appointment to President Fidel Valdez Ramos in 1992. Lito Osmena was Ramos' vice president in the 1992 elections.
The siblings of Congressman Sol became mayors of Oslob, Emelito "Tata" and Emiliano. A sister, Estudita Abines Dee became Barangay Captain of Lagunde.
A member of the Luna clan, Lawyer Ronald Luna Guaren (admitted to the Bar on May 10, 1991) is the present mayor of Oslob, Cebu. While the present vice mayor, Leonardo S. Rendon, belongs to the Rendon clan.
Oslob, Cebu prides of having its own homegrown lawyers: Jesus C. Ynclino (March 8, 1972), Faustino R. Rizon (April 19, 1979), Eleno V. Kabanlit (May 27, 1953), Teofanio C. Nunez (March 18, 1965), Dominador Tumulak (March 28, 1949), Amado C. Olis of Nueva Cacerers (February 7, 1963) and Paulino C. Pioquinto of Nueva Caceres (May 9, 1959). These lawyers were proud of their ancestry and their birthplace as they all did write in the Roll of Attorneys, Oslob, Cebu as their hometown.
