Serge and Noynoy

TO THE QUICK - Jerry Tundag - The Freeman

Serge Osmeña describes Noynoy Aquino as an awful manager. If it took Serge this long to make the discovery, then he himself is an awful judge of personality. Most Filipinos already knew back in 2010 what Serge is only now just discovering.

In the elections of 2010, when Serge ran for senator and Noynoy for president, more Filipinos did not vote for Noynoy than those who did. In other words, most voters already knew Noynoy did not have what it takes to make for a great manager.

Among those who did not know Noynoy would make for an awful manager at the time, that is if we are to believe what he is saying today, is Serge. In fact, Serge strongly endorsed Noynoy for president, which is to say he strongly believed in his capability as manager.

Either that, or Serge must have lied in 2010. If Serge already knew way back in 2010 that Noynoy would make for an awful president yet still had the gall to endorse his candidacy before the Filipino people, then Serge must have taken great liberties with the truth.

And if Noynoy is such an awful manager, which is to say he has mismanaged the country's affairs since assuming office in 2010, then Serg cannot escape taking part of the blame. He cannot wash his hands and say I told you so in 2010 because he didn't.

And he cannot wash his hands and say I am telling you now because he should have told us in 2010 but didn't. So what is Serge really trying to tell the Filipino people? That he be spared complicity in the great conspiracy of 2010 to hoodwink an entire country?

The problem with duplicity is that the duplicitous one always gets caught in the duplicity he peddles. Take a look at Serge. He may have slammed the door on Noynoy by calling him awful. Yet he still had the gall to leave a window open by calling Noynoy an honest man.

Wow, this Serge is really something. Noynoy an honest man? Again, hark back to 2010. Nobody knows a person better than that person himself. If Noynoy is as honest as Serge wants to portray him (that is if you can still believe Serge), then why, for God's sake did he allow himself to run for president.

Nobody knew better than Noynoy himself that he was such an awful manager that he could never make for a good president. Yet he allowed himself to star in the grand conspiracy to hoodwink the Filipino people. How can such dishonesty make for an honest man?

But what makes Noynoy worse than other dishonest men is that he has no qualms taking the name of the Lord his God in vain. Prior to accepting the nomination of his Liberal Party, Noynoy pretended to go into a religious retreat to invoke divine guidance.

Divine guidance, my foot. You do not need divine guidance to know whether or not you are up to the task of managing the affairs of an entire country. All you need is a little honesty. But even a little honesty Noynoy cannot spare for his country.

So Noynoy went through with his charade of going into retreat and emerged from it as if some great olden prophet made wise by 40 days of fasting in the desert -- he proclaimed himself ready to accept his party nomination and, if elected, become the country's next president.

Well, he did get elected, by the minority consisting of those who did not know any better, those who knew better but were willing to parlay what they knew for their personal gain, and the even fewer who, quite incredibly, actually believed Noynoy can manage the country ably.

Now here we are, still no different from where we used to be four years ago, the remaining two years giving no assurance things will get any better. Having come this far on a fool's errand, it does not help for anyone like Serge telling us what he should have told everyone since 2010 -- that Noynoy's not the man.
