EDITORIAL - SK has gone out of control

The Freeman

It seems the Sangguniang Kabataan election is well on its way to postponement. This after the House of Representatives approved on last and final reading the proposal rescheduling the SK polls from October this year to October in 2016.

At least 185 lawmakers voted Monday afternoon in favor of House Bill 2349, which sought to postpone the 2013 SK elections. The bill will now be forwarded to the bicameral conference committee of both chambers to settle with a version of the Senate.

Once the SK election is officially postponed, it would leave only the barangay polls to be held this year. In fact, all roads now lead to the electoral exercise next month as the Commission on Elections is now busy preparing for the barangay election.

Many expect that the postponement of the SK election will pave the way for its eventual abolition. Lest we forget, there are moves to abolish the youth organization for a simple reason that it fails to live up to public expectations.

The SK was created for the sole purpose of utilizing the youth to make them an important partner in nation building. Being the future leaders, the government sees the need to mold them into a responsible sector of society.

But 20 years into its existence, we have yet to see the SK doing exceptional things in helping its ranks. What is supposed to be an organization created to lead the youth has miserably turned into a useless institution.

What makes it worse is that the SK has become highly politicized. Many politicians use the organization as a launching pad for their sons and daughters in their quest to sustain their dynasty.

The SK was established with the noble goal of helping the youth become good leaders in the future. But it seems it has gone out of control and has turned into a hopeless entity. And the only way to solve the many problems pestering its existence is to abolish the organization itself.
