Every Azkal has his day

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

The news story says the bishops asked for expensive SUVs from PCSO. Hearing about this, many people in my place became very religious. “Jesus, Maria y Josef,” they said.

 “PCSO Uncovers Check Issued to Bishops” — Headline. Talk of winning in the lotto jackpot without betting.

 Everyone it seems doesn’t see the Azkals beating the Kuwaitis. But let’s not lose hope. Every dog has its day. And isn’t an Azkal a dog?

 As I watched Ronnie Nathanielz cover the Sri Lanka-Azkals football game, I couldn’t help asking myself: “What could Ronnie’s feelings be right now?” Ronnie, one of the country’s top sports broadcasters, is a native of Sri Lanka.

 There are kids who brave the rain and mud in their desire to go to school. Praiseworthy kids. But there are other kids who suffer more just to be able to get educated.

* * *

 They are those kids in a remote village in Masbate who dive and swim in a deep sea to get to where their school is located. This was reported on GMA News TV recently. It tugs at one’s heart to see these children — 10 to 12 years old —diving into the sea and swimming across the wide expanse of water to get to their make -shift school on the other side of their village.

 I hope the DepEd people saw that TV footage, get pricked in their senses, and do something for these kids.

 I believe it is unfair for the government to remove Cebuano Ambassador Frank Benedict from his diplomatic career. Mr. Benedicto is perhaps the most experienced diplomat in our foreign service.

* * *

 Frank, as he is simply called by friends in the local press, has been assigned to several important postings — Singapore, Brazil, Korea, China, Canada, etc. — where he lived up to the expectations of qualified observers.

 Meanwhile, congratulations to Ambassador Benedicto for having been made recipient of the prestigious Grand Chamber Beyond Boundaries Award for Foreign Service from the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. To say that Frank deserves the award is an understatement.
