Justice for our lolas

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas -

You may already have received this urgent petition through your email. Just in case you have not yet received this request, we are printing this to support our Lolas' long delayed cry for justice.

This is our Lolas' letter addressed to President Noynoy Aquino and the Philippine Congress:

"The Philippine Supreme Court has recently denied again the Filipino comfort women's petition to compel the Executive Branch to take up the cudgels against the Japa-nese government.

We, the undersigned, petition to compel the Philippine President and the Philip-pine Legislature to demand the Japanese government to make amends by providing a just compensation for these women who were victims of Japanese military sexual slavery dur-ing World War II.

We, the undersigned, petition our President Noynoy Aquino to be true to his "daang matuwid" slogan by taking up the cause of the Filipino comfort women with or without the decision of the Supreme Court.

We urge Pangulong Noynoy to discuss the Filipino comfort women's demands with Japanese officials during his scheduled visit to Japan on 14 November 2010.

We also petition the Members of the Philippine Congress to take this cause on behalf of the Filipino comfort women. We, the undersigned, challenge the Philippine Congress to pass a resolution demanding the Japanese government to formally acknowl-edge, sincerely apologize and accept historical responsibility by providing just compensa-tion to the Filipino comfort women.

This was done by the US Congress, Canadian Lower House and the Dutch Par-liament. Why can't the Philippine Congress do the same?

As of December 2005, 45 of the 173 Filipino comfort women already died. Should we wait for them to all die before they get the justice they are longing for? Justice for the Lolas now! "

For those who want to know more about this campaign for support for our lolas, the facebook site provides videos and newspaper accounts related to their stories and fight for justice.

One contributor provided this information: "An estimated 200,000 women in In-donesia, the Philippines, Korea, Taiwan and China and other Asian countries were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese imperial army during World War II. The women were called jugun ianfu, a euphemism which has been translated as comfort women."

Still another supporter of the lolas recall that " when the Supreme Court petition was filed in 2004, some 70 lolas signed it. Now, they are down to 52, as another Lola died while the plagiarism case is being debated." This particular supported urges all for action now!

Finally, the urgency of this campaign for support from all is explained by this other contributor who wrote: "President Noynoy Aquino is scheduled to visit Japan on November 14, 2010. Let us gather more voices and compel him to take up the issue of the comfort women before the Japanese government.

We agree that we all have to go beyond the horrors and bad memories of the 2nd World War and move on to forge sincere ties of friendship and peace with Japan and other countries throughout the world.

Where past mistakes, however, can be rectified, by all means, let us campaign for justice to be rendered, hopefully, prayerfully, within the lifetime of the lolas and the other war victims.
