My birthday wishes

CTALK - Cito Beltran -

What would you wish for if someone showed up on your birthday and granted you three wishes?

Today being my birthday the first thing I would wish for is three more wishes, which effectively proves I learned something in Math 11 and Political Science. Now that I’ve increased my options, I would now have to think hard about my next five wishes.

If I wished for peace and brotherhood, I might end up being transformed into a cross-dressing hairy ape in a bathing suit since that sort of wish, is made by beauty queens in beauty pageants.

They say that if a country has a godly leader, the nation will be blessed and will prosper. But the problem is a lot of today’s candidates actually believe that they talked to God, they speak with God or they heard from God. That, in a nutshell, is the reason they submit for running for public office. No I am not calling them nuts, you are.

To be fair, I actually believe them. I believe that God may have in fact spoken to them or through someone to tell them to run for public office. The only question is: did they talk to God Almighty or the God they appointed as their consultant to tell them what they want to hear? Be careful you may be equally guilty of making God your consultant.

On the other hand, there is this small possibility that some of those who spoke with God or heard from God may have been: MISLED by God. Now before you get into a religious fanatical fit, I suggest that you verify my “heresy” and see how many times, the real God Almighty intentionally, angrily, or mockingly misled and toyed with people who were so full of themselves. Check it out under “Fool”, “mocked” or “pride”.

Unfortunately when God does this, the unwitting victim also becomes deaf and undoubtedly dumb as in “Dumb and dumber”. Times like this you realize that the story of the Emperor’s Invisible clothes is an example of art imitating life.

My second wish could be to have the best President we ever had, but that would be a wasted wish since the best President this country could ever have will probably be dead in six months, impeached in a year, or rendered useless in two.

President Ramon “My Guy” Magsaysay died in a plane crash. Given a chance he would have fixed the peasant insurgency that would have saved the country millions of pesos spent for guns and bullets that American companies supplied. Pilot error or conspiracy?

President Corazon Aquino was waylaid, attacked and destabilized in her efforts to reinvent the political geography of the Philippines when those she trusted most focused on becoming political and economic feudal lords.

President Joseph Estrada did not even get a chance to do a lap on his Presidential trip because the Tsinoy and Mestizo businessmen successfully convinced and manipulated Metro Manila into believing our economic end was near and Erap was the grim reaper.

Benevolence and vision are very expensive propositions when faced by the economic and political feudalism under the control of the Spanish mestizos and the Taipanic Tsinoy families.

Then you have to consider one political interest versus another political interest. How many people have stopped to consider our political future if Noynoy Aquino becomes President and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo becomes Speaker of the house?

I am almost certain that it will be another 6 years of political feuds and stalemate. Congress appropriates funds, legislates programs and is vital to the Executive but why will they cooperate with a party that has pictured them as the children of evil and has hinted at their displeasure of not getting a taste of the pork barrel.

If Gibo wins due to a voters revolt, the same scenario will play out as the “children of evil” will surely suck the blood out of the self-righteous senoritos.

Perhaps, I should wish for a spiritual renewal to come upon all Filipinos, that way they can pray for our leaders and our leaders can deal with the abusive and corrupt “modern day feudal lords” while the voters deal with the children of evil and the self righteous senoritos.

I still have four wishes, so why not wish for an agricultural revolution where Filipinos can rediscover and rebuild our farming heritage and work towards real food security. Hey it’s my wish so I don’t have to explain. Actually I can.

If more Filipinos started to develop and promoted real down to earth sustainable natural organic farming and not fad driven life-stylized backyard gardening, we will eventually get rid of chemical fertilizers personally endorsed by every secretary of Agriculture. That in turn would reduce chemical related diseases and deaths that suck up so much personal and family wealth.

Once we do this, the issue of cheaper medicines will become a thing of the past since most Filipinos won’t be overweight, won’t be hypertensive, won’t be diabetic and won’t have as many cases of gout or arthritis because we would be eating natural foods.

Real organic farming would lead into increase yields, lower costs, higher profits and because many of us get into the act, we will then have more disposable income to buy other goods and services.

Imagine that. I multiplied three wishes into five, saved three and ended up addressing part of our economic problem, our public health care problems and I did not even need to wish for “the best president we ever had”.

Now, do I wish for a Ford GT-40 or a 1958 Corvette?
