The mathematics of betrayal

As a former HR practitioner for more than 25 years, I have formulated an equation that somehow indicates why human beings commit offenses. To make it more dramatic, I translated the formula into Tagalog.

The formula is K (which stands for Kasalanan) equals H (Hilig) times P (Pagkakataon). If an OFW has no Hilig (propensity) even if there are lots of Pagkakataon (opportunity), the formula may be H(0) x P(10) = OK (walang kasalanan).

If an OFW is full of Hilig, and if there is no Pagkakataon, the equation shall be H(10) x P(0)= OK (walang kasalanan). But if an OFW is full of Hilig and there are lots of Pagkakataon abroad, the formula shall be H(10) x P(10) = 100K (or 100 Kasalanan). Even with a minimum of Hilig and a minimum of Pagkakataon it shall result to a big offense. That is, H(5) x P(5) = 25K.

Our conclusion is clear: Infidelity is the confluence of two factors. The Hilig of an OFW (determined by his character and values, internal to the person) and the Pagkakataon (the stimuli in the environment). 

Antidote against indiscretions

To be immune from the evils of indiscretions, we recommend three things: First, strengthen your faith in God. Second, solidify your family ties. Third, keep yourself busy with positive and productive things.

Faith requires obedience to God’s commandments. It would be very unlikely for a deeply religious person to be unfaithful to his/her husband or wife. The second thing is strengthening the OFWs ties with one’s family. Constant communication with the spouse by telephone, text, internet and other means between husbands and wives is essential to the preservation of mutual loyalty and love of spouses.

Keeping oneself busy all the time minimizes the opportunity for sin. There are hundreds of ways to keep oneself occupied. To develop a hobby like painting, photography, writing and other productive endeavors is a very effective method of avoiding indiscretions. To be active in Filipino community organizations and be deeply involved in socio-civic projects is another effective way. Or to spent time in prayer meetings and other religious activities. Or sports like basketball, badminton, bowling or the cerebral chess. Basta, kung gustong umiwas, maraming paraan. Kung gustong kumaliwa, maraming dahilan.

At the end of the day, it is the free will of the OFW that will govern. To be or not to be depends on him or her. There is no one else to blame. OFWs should realize that if they could do it abroad, their spouses can well do it here. Ampo ug amping, likay sa kinawat nga kalipay.
