Mistaken for Japanese

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -

More and more Cebuanos are selling their kidneys. The Department of Health is alarmed. Its advice: Don’t DOH it.

* * *

Those who sell their kidneys must do it secretly. The BIR might hear of it and slap them with sales  tax.

* * *

Kidney selling has become some kind of a “business” now where the sellers (also known as donors) sell (donate) their kidney’s at prices ranging from P30,000 to P50,000. Free from VAT.

For the first time in five years, I was able to go to a beach resort in Mactan Sunday. While sitting at the edge of the beachhead, some “dispatchers” (you can call them too?) for motorized bancas approached me if I wanted to go island hopping.

Thinking I was Japanese (Mactan, I learned, is swarming with Japanese and Koreans) some of them said to me:

“Ohayo kudaymas. Island-hopping, tomodachi san?”

“Ay, lang, Dong, di ko Hapon,” I said.

He then told his companions: “Bisaya diay, Bay. Wa tay masapi ana.”

Every Sunday all — repeat, all — Roman Catholic churches in Cebu (and maybe in other provinces too) are bursting at the seams, so to speak, with churchgoers. As a Roman Catholic I find this an inspiring sight. But I was quite sad after the revelation made by Dr. Laddie Dioko of UV and The Freeman about our young people who call themselves Catholic. Dr. Dioko said in one gathering of hundreds of young people under the auspices of the government office he was then the key man, 80 to 90 percent of the youths did not know how to pray the Our Father and Hail Mary. Who is the blame for this? Laddie  just shrugged his shoulders and said nothing –– although I’m sure he knows who deserves the blame.

I have it from mediaman Jesse Bacon that Sen. Mar Roxas has proposed the holding of an ASEAN leaders summit on food security in the region. As I write this, Senator Roxas was preparing to pass a resolution relative to his proposal.

* * *

Considering that sufficiencly of food is beginning to become a problem in ASEAN, it behooves the Senate to back Senators Roxas’ resolution. This is a move that would  benefit not only the Philippines but also the other members of ASEAN.
