Why there's much sound and fury about the Summit

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -
The Asean Summit has withstood the storm whipped up by the critics. But not the real storm they call Seniang.

A key police officer was right when he said: "We can stop the terrorists but we can't stop nature."

The 12th Asean Summit has spawned a lot of problems. Some people who're supposed to help provide solution approached the problems not with open mind but, to borrow Adlai Stevenson's words, with open mouth.
* * *
That's the reason why there's so much sound and fury about the Summit. A lot of people, in assessing - or trying to assess - the pros and cons of the issue, close their mind and open their mouth.

The new Summit sked is a week before the Sinulog festival. By then, Cebu will be in frenzied celebration mood. The "ghost town" scenario will be no more. God sure has a way of foiling a crazy move.

Our good Ambassador to Malaysia Vic Lecaros, the official spokesman for the Asean Summit, paid TF a visit last Thursday. It was a pleasure playing host to the man who has all the answers to the questions raised by people about the Summit.

Ambassador Lecaros has some good words for my good friend Leo Lastimosa. "Iya kong gi-interview mga 30 minutos wa gyud ko ka matikud nga 'anti' diay siya," the ambassador said. Well, that's the hallmark of a true journalist. Don't show your bias during an interview and let the interviewee feel comfortable. Hinuon kon duna kay column adto ibuga ang tanan mong aligutgot sa imong column.

Ambassador Lecaros is a Mass Communications graduate with journalism as his major. This could be the reason why he can get along pretty well with members of media.

I was asked what I think of the postponement of the Asean Summit. What I think is of no moment, but I say the postponement is necessary grounded as it is on the safety and security of the heads of state attending the Summit. And the safety too of the other people working for the Summit.

Basketball coach Chot Reyes says that RP could be a strong contender for the basketball title in the Asian Games if not for politics. That's an offensive foul - or charging - against the politicians, Chot.

Some politicians are in a hurry to change the Charter. But they're not in a hurry to even just try to change themselves.

"Bisan kapila pa usba ang Charter kun ang mga tawo nga nag-una-una sa pag-usab niini dili mag-usab sa ilang kaugalingon, mao ra gihapon ta, makaluluoy," commented my kumpadre Ted.
