Letter to the Editor — Church group lauds police over successful drug bust operations

Kamatuoran, Inc. (KI), a church-based organization that works towards a narcopolitics-free Philippines acknowledges the efforts of law enforcements authorities in solving the drug problem in Cebu.

This is manifested by a series of operations including the recent apprehension last July 11, 2006 of a policeman and a former policeman identified to be involved in the illegal trade. The two were arrested by operatives of the Vice Control Section of the Cebu City Police Office while about to hand in 50 grams of shabu estimated to cost P450,000.

The arrest is a victory of the people especially the young who have the right to live peaceably and be nurtured spiritually and emotionally towards the common good. KI lauds the men and women in the police force who are sincere in their work. We believe that there are still more honest than dishonest cops only that the latter are more organized; in fact, several of the recently apprehended cops happened to be classmates in the training batch.

The problem of illegal drugs continues because of narcopolitics. Civil society groups have emerged as advocates of the crusade against illegal drugs, while various faith communities are getting involved. A promising program is the PNP Values and Leadership School which seeks a "God-fearing, family-based, and service-oriented PNP," a low-key program where participants rediscover their God-given dignity and strengthen their resolve to be good public servants.

We call on all concerned citizens to be extra-vigilant on the ongoing proceedings of the mega shabu laboratory case in Mandaue that the truth may come out, and justice be done.

Finally, our prayers go out to those members of law enforcement and other government agencies serious in curbing illegal drugs. May the Lord bless and keep them safe in their work.
