Letter to the Editor Frat groups at Sinulog Mardi Gras
January 18, 2006 | 12:00am
I was watching the Sinulog Mardi Gras in front of the IE Bank along Mango Ave. The entire festivity was nice and peaceful. Then the float of one of the bellicose fraternities in the city appeared followed by the throng of its members (shall we say gangsters?).
I felt alarmed at the sight as there was somewhat a different aura on the looks of these youngsters that to my description befit minions from hell. They were shouting and waving signs (some waving dirty fingers). Suddenly there were peltings. They threw toward targets they didn't know which posed serious danger to onlookers and I'm sure some were hit by these peltings. Good thing the police reacted and the peltings were put to a stop.
Which brought to my mind the Sinulog organizers allowing these gangsters to participate in the Mardi Gras. I pray they won't be allowed to join next time as these people (we will consider them) are incorrigible. They breach all peace covenants they entered into and worse, they made a mockery of the sign of peace - the white dove that was perched atop their float.
