Letter to the Editor - Resignation not emergency powers
September 3, 2005 | 12:00am
We cringed with indignation when the government of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA), in the guise of solving the energy crisis, asked for emergency powers. This government, it seems, is so desperate and shameless to hold on to power to suggest such. Gabriela-Cebu believes GMA and cohorts need to be given a reality check in order to realize that GMA's resignation and not emergency powers can solve the energy crisis.
Reality check 1. The country's crisis is brought about by the growing distrust and discontentment with the leadership of GMA after the Hello Garci exposé.
Reality check 2. GMA strongly supported the oil deregulation bill when she was still senator that it easily became a law. This law has virtually made the Filipino people hostage to oil companies that increase oil prices at their whim.
It is clear that GMA's presence at the helm of the government is the one causing the grave crisis our nation is facing. Asking for emergency powers is tantamount to adding insult to the injury of the Filipino people.
The best thing that GMA and her cohorts can do is to exercise humility and selflessness and resign. But evidently, these two values have always been lacking in this government.
Women, as the hardest hit of the ongoing crisis, can only depend on their collective efforts to reject the GMA leadership.
