Yape flag bearer ng Team PHL sa closing ceremony

MANILA, Philippines — Matapos ang matagumpay na kampanya sa taek­wondo, pinangalanan si gold medalist Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape bilang flag bearer ng Team Philippines sa closing ceremony ng 2026 Asian Games na idaraos ngayong hapon sa Nagoya, Japan.

Itinalaga ni Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino si Yape dahil sa matikas na performance nito sa quadrennial meet.

“He’s deserving for that honor,” ani Tolentino.

Binasag ni Yape ang ilang dekadang pagkauhaw ng national taekwondo team sa gintong medalya matapos pagharian ang mixed virtual taekwondo event.

Ito ang unang ginto ng Pinoy jins sapul noong 1994 edisyon ng Asian Games.

Kaya naman karapat-dapat si Yape para maging flag bearer ng pambansang delegasyon.

“It will be a recognition not only for Jeus but also for taekwondo, which finally won its first Asian Games gold medal since 1994, when the sport became a medal event in the games,” ani Tolentino.

Maliban sa ginto sa mixed virtual taekwondo, su­miguro pa si Yape ng tanso sa men’s individual poomsae.

Sa kabuuan, may isang ginto, tatlong pilak at isang tanso ang Pinoy jins.

Galing ang mga pilak kina Juliana Mykhail Candelaria (women’s individual poomsae), Tachiana Keizha Mangin (women’s -49 kg.) at Kurt Barbosa (men’s -58 kg.)

Magsisimula ang opening ceremony sa alas-5 ng hapon (oras sa Maynila) sa Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium kung saan inaasahan ang magarbong palabas para pormal na isara ang ika-20 edisyon ng Asian Games.
