SunKissed Lola chooses love over pride in comeback single
MANILA, Philippines — SunKissed Lola is turning a familiar Filipino phrase into a warm and heartfelt anthem about love, patience, and choosing a relationship over pride with its new single.
Released more than a year after the band’s last EP, “Edi Magalit Ka” marks a new chapter for the group behind fan favorites such as “Pasilyo,” “Paki Sabi,” and “Makalimutan Ka.”
Known for songs that explore love, longing, and the complexities of relationships, SunKissed Lola gives the phrase “Edi Magalit Ka” a softer meaning. Rather than sounding dismissive or confrontational, the line becomes an affectionate reminder that even when couples argue, love remains.
“It’s a song about relationships,” vocalist Laura Lacbain said. “Hindi maiiwasan ang away sa relationship, pero hindi pa rin mawawala ang love. Susuyuin pa rin sa huli.”
Vocalist and guitarist Alvin “Bino” Serito describes the track as a “loving anthem,” emphasizing that anger does not necessarily erase affection.
“Even if you’re mad with your special someone, at the end of the day, they’re still your favorite person to come home to,” he said.
From the baul
“Edi Magalit Ka” traces its beginnings to 2021, although the song initially carried a more prideful tone.
As the band continued working on the track, however, its members decided to soften the lyrics and make the message more emotionally open. Vocalist and guitarist Dan Ombao said Bino helped shape the confession-like portions of the song, including the addition of the line “’Di ba?” to make the overall message gentler.
At its core, the song is about putting love ahead of ego.
“No one has to win,” Bino said. “I will always choose the relationship over the argument.”
That shift in perspective ultimately shaped the final version of the song. What could have sounded sarcastic or stubborn became a sincere expression of affection and reconciliation.
Even the title was intentionally chosen to spark curiosity.
“The title was intriguing in itself,” Laura said. “You will be curious. Pwedeng i-send sa jowa. You really need to listen to the song to understand the context.”
Easy listening
Musically, “Edi Magalit Ka” reflects a more relaxed and intentional side of SunKissed Lola.
Dan recalls that the song began as an acoustic piece before he introduced it to the rest of the band. From there, the members built the arrangement together, with each contributing elements that complemented the song’s message.
Bassist Danj Quimson said the band deliberately kept the production simple and laidback to give the lyrics room to shine.
“We all united to make it sound laid-back, simple, and we wanted to highlight the lyrics of the song,” he shared.
Unlike some of the band’s earlier material, which featured more unpredictable arrangements, “Edi Magalit Ka” was crafted to be lighter, warmer, and easier to listen to.
“For this one, we made it simple for the audience,” Bino said. “We made it magaan sa tainga.”
Dan agrees, noting that the song’s musical direction matches its message.
“That’s also what the song asks for. A very simple, refreshing, and warm song,” he said.
For drummer Genson Viloria, part of the track’s appeal is its immediate familiarity. When he first heard it, he recalled thinking it sounded like a cover because of how catchy and natural it felt.
For Dan, its honesty is what makes the track stand out, while Laura considers it a fresh direction for the group because of its focus on navigating the everyday struggles of being in a relationship.
“It’s the comeback of SunKissed Lola,” Laura said.
As the band approaches its fifth year, “Edi Magalit Ka” also signals a more mature and intentional era for SunKissed Lola.
Danj says he noticed a change in the group during the recording process, with each member becoming more focused on contributing to the song as a whole rather than simply showcasing their individual strengths.
For Bino, the band is returning to its roots with a clearer understanding of what makes its music resonate with listeners.
“We know our strengths and now we are able to maximize it,” he said. “We are more intentional in releasing this song.”
The band also plans to release more content, hold more gigs and tours, and give fans a closer look at the members beyond their roles as musicians.
“Edi Magalit Ka” is now available on all major streaming platforms.
